New receiver Brandon Gibson appears ready to play ..
By Bill Coats
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
Erstwhile Rams linebacker Will Witherspoon terrorized the Washington Redskins on Monday night, returning an interception for a touchdown, collecting a team-high eight tackles, including a sack, and forcing a fumble in a 27-17 Philadelphia victory.
The day before, wide receiver Brandon Gibson — the player the Eagles traded for Witherspoon — spent the afternoon in street clothes on the sideline at the Edward Jones Dome, watching Indianapolis cruise to a 42-6 win.
The Rams' coaches decided that Gibson, a rookie out of Washington State drafted in the sixth round, wasn't up to speed on the offensive scheme — even though it's similar to what the Eagles run. MORE RAMS
"It's not exact; people think it is, but it's not," coach Steve Spagnuolo explained. "There are little nuances he's got to learn. Getting used to the quarterback, getting used to all those things being out here, that takes a little bit of time. He's a young guy."
Apparently Gibson made up considerable ground this week in practice. Although the tight-lipped Spagnuolo wouldn't make a commitment, it appears Gibson will suit up Sunday when the 0-7 Rams take on the 1-5 Lions at Detroit's Ford Field.
"It's looking positive for Brandon," Spagnuolo said Friday. "I thought he did some nice things today, a couple of long balls and had some other plays. As long as he knows how to get lined up, we'll be OK."
It's not looking so promising for fellow wideout Ruvell Martin. Although he has recovered from the hamstring injury that sidelined him for three weeks, Martin got scant work with the first-team offense this week.
If the Rams dress four wide receivers, as has been the case in each game so far, the foursome probably will be Danny Amendola, Donnie Avery, Keenan Burton and either Gibson or Tim Carter.
VOBORA TO START
The suspense isn't quite so thick at linebacker, where David Vobora has reclaimed the starting spot on the strong side after completing his four-week suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances.
"Dave jumped in and didn't skip a beat" at practice, Spagnuolo said. "He was a little rusty in some areas, but he had a good week. ... Now, going into a game a month later is a little bit different than in practice."
Spagnuolo said that Larry Grant also could see some time at strongside linebacker against the Lions.
Vobora insisted he wasn't concerned whether his job would be waiting for him when he returned. "I was just worried about getting back and doing whatever I could," he said. "It's just good to be back with my teammates."
Defensive lineman C.J. Ah You, who sprained an ankle last Sunday against the Colts, had limited work Friday — the first time he practiced all week — and was listed as questionable on the injury report.
Avery (shoulder), defensive end James Hall (groin), cornerback Justin King (groin) and defensive tackle Clifton Ryan (illness) were probable. Ryan practiced Friday after sitting out Thursday.
Richie Incognito (foot) is out. Adam Goldberg will start in his place at right guard.
Quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Calvin Johnson are expected to play Sunday for Detroit. Both had been nursing knee injuries. ... Steven Jackson has rushed for 635 yards — third in the league — and is seeking to become the first player in franchise history to top 1,000 in five consecutive seasons. ... Quarterback Marc Bulger needs 99 passing yards to reach 22,224 and move past Roman Gabriel into second place on the Rams' career list. No. 1 is Jim Everett, with 23,758.
