New starting RB Darby critiques himself

    11.07.2008 4:35 pm
    AROUND THE HORNS
    By Bill Coats

Kenneth Darby, the former Alabama RB who is expected to start for the Rams on Sunday at the Meadowlands, is confident, but also humble. He even seems to enjoy a bit of self-deprecation now and then. Consider these responses this week, as Darby prepared to take over for the hobbled Steven Jackson:

*On trying to learn the Rams offense in just three weeks: “It’s been pretty good. Art Valero, our running backs coach, is a great teacher, and he’s taught me pretty much the whole system. The only thing I have to do now is polish up in certain areas. Even though I mess up now and then, that’s normal. I’m not messing up as bad as I thought I would when I first got here.”

*On starting his first NFL game: “The opportunity I’m getting this Sunday is very rare for most guys. Especially for a guy of my caliber.”

Darby has shown in practice that he has some juice, and if he gets some room upfront, he could do some damage. He had a terrific junior season at Bama before injuries and family difficulties hindered his senior year. The Rams might’ve unearthed a diamond in the rough here.

    Notes & quotes:

*Cardinals CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who slammed WR Torry Holt to the ground after a play last week, was fined $5,000 by the NFL for unnecessary roughness.

*Holt has taken to wearing different uniform numbers during Friday practices. Last week, he had on No. 9, his number at Eastern Guilford High in Gibsonville, N.C. Today, it was No. 1, a nod to his being a first-round draft pick in 1999.

*Holt enjoys playing in — or at least near — New York City. “I like the New York atmosphere,” he said. “The crowd definitely loves their Jets and they love their Giants. They love their New York sports, period. It’s always fun going up to the Big City, the Big Apple and having an opportunity to showcase your talents.”

*Jim Haslett confirmed Friday and Derek Stanley will return kicks and punts. Dante Hall went on IR this week after suffering a high ankle sprain vs. the Cards.

    All for now . . .

I'm excited to see what Stanley can do with returning duties.

I dont get why SJ cannot stay healthy. He keeps it up he will soon be a forgotton back and people will be wondering why someone who showed so much promise just diminished. All that money on a injury proned player? Im starting to wonder if we should cut our losses and try to get him traded in the offseason. How could someone so big be so soft mind boggling man up SJ get your butt ready to play.

Good luck Ken Darby this Sunday! ROLL TIDE ON DEM JETS!
At this point the Rams have nothing to lose. Let loose the young pups ( Avery, Burton, Darby, etc.). Can anyone guess what number he will wear? 28 maybe?
The Arizona Cardinals have a nice young RB who has replaced Edgerin James, and ofcourse he looked good as he ripped through the Rams run D.
Rams need an alternative to Steven Jackson, and maybe Darby will give him a run for his money! Here's to the New Rams!

Hopefully, Kenneth Darby has taken a peek or two at Marshall's old game tapes, a crash course in RUNNING BACKING is desperately needed for Sundays game against the Jets.

Yes I am tired of the dancing at the line that SJ does. Please just hit the line and keep your legs moving. I'd rather gain 3-4 yards per carry than lose 3-4 yards because of the dancing he does which loses the momentum he has. Go Darby!!!!!!!!

He'll be wearing #33 .. No doubt the kid will be pumped. We need a guy who explodes to the hole - no dancing just full bore ahead. If there isn't a hole I hope he puts his hat square on the backside of whichever O-lineman failed to creat one for him ala Craig Heyward. Even if it is the smallest of creases, hit the darn thing with everything you've got and keep those legs going while protecting the ball.

    GO GET EM KENNY D.!!!!!!!

Heheh, just tell Darby not to do that to Leckey, because Leckey will get sandwiched by Jenkins and Darby, and

    Darby + Leckey < Jenkins

Don't worry, they'd probably have Bell's help, too. Between the three of them, they're probably at least approaching Jenkin's massive weight.
