Newson activated, shivers waived

According to an article just posted on the Post-dispatch site, the rams have activated tony newson and waived shivers, the first draft pick from this year to be cut. Apparantly, shivers, who was labeled a steal in round 5, did not pick up the defense very well. Aeneas probably doesnt have more than another 5 years before retirement, so at some point we will need to find a potential replacement, but i guess it wont be shivers.

Re: Newson activated, shivers waived

With the addition of Lucas I guess he became expendable. What a waste of a draft pick.

I think you're being pretty generous. I'd give him three max, but I hope I'm wrong.

Anyways, I was very optimistic about Shivers so this is discouraging to me. Hopefully they're able to either put him on the practice squad or, well, I guess that's about it.

Re: Newson activated, shivers waived

Nick, i was being a bit sarcastic on my 5 year window on aeneas. three more would be great, i would take two more good ones after this year. Of course, like everything else in the nfl today, its really a function of cap, and how much less he is willing to take as he wears down. I could see him as our head coach someday.

Re: Newson activated, shivers waived

this is some BS... they should not wave someone with that much talent for not understanding the defense. I'm sure that there are some other players who could have been waved instead, and anyways don't most rookies take a while to "understand" the defense that they are running in. Shoot they should have cut an offensive player and ain't Trev goin' on the IR?

I, too, was very optimistic about Shivers. Many analysts believed that if he had stayed for his senior year he would have been at least a 3rd rounder and possibly even a 2nd round pick. MY question is why are they keeping Kennedy on the current roster? There is next to no chance he will play this year considering the type of injury he sustained. And even if he returns this year what kind of shape and strength will exhibit from so long of a layoff? Sehorn had a foot operation this past February and he still isn't recovered. And he doesn't weigh 330# like Kennedy.

Good idea. Dogpile. I gotta say though that I would expect to keep draft picks around longer or get rid of scouts sooner. Something was wasted.

From what I have heard, Shivers didn't understand the defense and didn't seem to care. He was flippant about missing assignments and positions on the practice field. It sounded like Shivers was more interested in getting back to the business he started in college than playing pro ball.

If that's right, then it's good to get rid of him now. You can teach tackling, you can coverage, you can teach strength, and contrary to popular belief you can even teach speed. But you can not teach heart.

Don't be surprised if the Rams go after linebacker Levar Fisher, who was just released by the Cardinals.

Like HUbison said, get rid of him now. But I'm still wondering how much of this might have been avoided with different scouting techniques? Were the scouts only looking at game day tapes?
