The Next Rams Head Coach
This thread is not about whether Mike Martz will return.
For the purposes of this thread, assume he will not.
There are two names at the top of my list of potential new Head Coaches for the Rams:
1A: Jim Johnson - currently Defensive Coordinator for the Eagles
1B: Monte Kiffen - currently Defensive Coordinator for the Bucs
The Rams need to go in the direction of focusing on the defense. I think that Steve Fairchild could be retained to run the offense. Marmie is out.
That's how I see it.
Welcome to the St. Louis Rams!

Re: The Next Rams Head Coach
Why would anyone with half a brain in their head want to coach the Rams after seeing how our FO treats their head coaches????????? We'd be lucky to get Mike Tice

That still leaves plenty of people out there with less than half a brain who'd probably jump at the opportunity.Clannie Nominee for ClanRam's Thickest Poster

Re: The Next Rams Head Coach
Out of the two choices listed, I'd prefer to have Monte Kiffen, because of his history with the Cover 2 that the Rams defense has utilized. The Cover 2 wasn't a great defense for the Rams, because in the latter years of Lovie the D was definitely on the decline, but I think Kiffen would be able to bring a lot of knowledge and experience running it and help maximize what we could do with it. He knows the kind of personnel we need, and knows how to make it work. He knows the kind of staff members capable of making it work, and I think that might be better for this defense than bringing in someone like Johnson, who's much more aggressive.
The question I have about Fairchild is would he be able to develop the offense like Martz does every offseason? Would he be able to help it evolve as Martz does, or is he simply executing what Martz gives him, and it's all Martz in terms of the growth and evolution of the offense? Because if that's the case, and Fairchild isn't a developer, then I don't think he'd be able to take the weight of this offense on his shoulders and continue to make it work long-term. And furthermore, would a new head coach allow the same offense to remain, or would he want to bring in an offense he's familiar with instead of running Martz's system?

Re: The Next Rams Head Coach
I'd say Joe Vitt.
Remember that if an outside coach comes in there will be personnel changes and it might not be for the better.
Vitt so far has impressed me with his no BS approach, and getting the players to focus on the fundamentals.
He's been dealing with half a deck, lets see what he can do with a full one.JUST WIN ONE FOR THE FANS

Re: The Next Rams Head Coach
the short answer to why anyone would want to coach the rams is that this team has plenty of talent. usually, coaches have to take over reclamation projects to get their shot.

Re: The Next Rams Head Coach
I have been thinking about this topic for awhile now and two names keep cropping up.
1.) Jeff Fisher
2.) Herm Edwards
It is my belief that one, if not both, of these two will be made available by their respective teams at the end of this year( and not necessarily for their own incompetence but more for circumstances beyond their direct control.)
I think with their defensive and head coaching backgrounds that either of these two gentlemen would be a prize catch for the Rams.

Re: The Next Rams Head Coach
I'm a huge, HUGE Martz fan. I think Mike Martz is the best thing to ever happen to the St. Louis Rams. However, if the Rams are going to go after a new HC....I hope it's one with a defensive mindset.

Re: The Next Rams Head Coach
OK...different spin on this one.
Zygmunt is fired, Martz stays on as headcoach, but knows that Marmie must go.
Who do we want as our new DC next year ???
I'd stay inside and promote Vitt.

I don't remember Pete doing much when he was in the NFL.

I think Carroll flopped in the NFL.
I believe Monte Kiffin, 62, is being paid like a head coach and has publicly stated he's not interested in being a head Coach.
