Re: NFL DRAFT: With 110th pick, Rams select MO ALEXANDER (S, Utah State)

    OVERVIEW
Birth name is Maurice. St. Louis native who also earned all-state recognition in wrestling and track as a prep. Began his college career at Arizona Western College in 2009, playing in 10 games and recording 81 tackles and two interceptions with 17.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks and two forced fumbles. Appeared in 12 games in 2010 and had 98 tackles, four pass breakups and one interception with 19 tackles for loss (for 116 yards), eight sacks and one forced fumble. The 19 tackles for loss ranked second in the NJCAA, and the yards lost total ranked first. Moved on to Utah State in 2011 and played outside linebacker, appearing in 12 games (eight starts) with 45 tackles, seven tackles for loss, three sacks and one pass breakup. During the off-season, he punched a teammate in the face after a party, and charges were filed (the teammate subsequently underwent emergency surgery). He originally faced a second-degree felony, but he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of aggravated assault resulting in bodily injury, a class A misdemeanor. After initially being ordered to serve a year in jail, the judge suspended all but 45 days of the jail sentence. He was kicked off the team for the 2012 season but was given a second chance, returning in 2013. He started 13 games at free safety, registering 80 tackles, six pass breakups and one interception with nine tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Missed the Poinsettia Bowl after undergoing wrist surgery, which also prevented him from bench pressing at the combine (medical exclusion).

    ANALYSIS

    STRENGTHS

Explosive, punishing tackler. Very good size and movement skills. Has a 38-inch vertical jump and explosion in his legs. Covers ground fast and is surprisingly loose-hipped for a converted linebacker. Drops into the box and fits in the run game. Physical tackler. Effective blitzer. Aggressive and energetic. Has special-teams experience.

    WEAKNESSES
Miscast in deep coverage. Has man-coverage limitations. Lacks ideal foot speed to adjust to quick slot receivers. Average hands. Inconsistent ball reactions -- in position to make plays, but doesn't. Can be overaggressive and take poor angles. Was kicked off the team and dealt with criminal assault charges for an altercation with a teammate. Very raw understanding of coverages and football concepts.

    DRAFT PROJECTION Rounds 4-5

    BOTTOM LINE
Big, physical, athletic, converted linebacker with very intriguing athletic traits. Was humbled by the loss of football as a junior and made the most of his second chance as a senior. Graded well in his first year in the secondary and solid combine showing helped his draft standing. Possesses the size, aggressiveness, striking ability and movement skill desired at the position, yet will require considerable patience to be groomed.

NFL.com has a profile on him. Make him sound like a big hitter with coverage being a weakness and not a center fielder.

Very, very questionable pick. This guy punched out his own teammate and spent 45 days in jail. Can't cover... Why take a guy who is like T.J McDonald but worse?

Profile sounds like a Greg Williams pick.

This is like finding a rusted out '67 GTO in a junk yard somewhere and bringing it home. If the project comes together you've got a hell of a ride... if not you're just wasting garage space.

Watch Maurice Alexander late in the process and really liked what I saw. Big/physical safety that will smack you and has quality range.

Alexander is kind of a freak. He was someone I was told was a sleeper by a guy in the league. I haven't studied him, though.

    Jim Thomas ‏@jthom1 4m
Alexander made "local" visit to Rams. He was kicked off Utah State team after punching a teammate.

Alexander spent 45 days in jail because of the incident with the teammate.

    Jim Thomas ‏@jthom1 5m
After returning to St. Louis after his suspension from Utah State, he worked at the Edward Jones Dome _ including during Rams games.

    From Walter Football:

St. Louis Rams: Mo Alexander, S, Utah State: D Grade Mo Alexander is a reach. He has off-the-field issues, so he was projected to go much later. The Rams, however, have shown that they don't care about such things. They're filling a need, but I don't get why they'd pass on someone like Dion Bailey.

Re: NFL DRAFT: With 110th pick, Rams select MO ALEXANDER (S, Utah State)

Safety was obviously a need. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course. If there is one position on the field that coach knows better than the rest of us combined, its safety (being a former safety). We have taken "character" risks before. I trust Coach and Snead's judgment on that issue. They have interviewed him. They make the judgment. Who knows what happened in the fight? He seemed to atone and comeback with a solid senior season. Raw, sure, but so what? Just a data point, but Kiper had him ranked ahead of Ed Reynolds, who many others on this board thought highly of.

I think this falls into the category of trusting fisher and snead. I dont see why people would have a problem with the pick, this is one real flaw in the evaluation process for fans. We dont have all the data. It isnt all about watching film. This is why you interview people before you hire them for jobs, you dont just make an offer based on what you see on paper (or film). No one on this board has any remote clue how this guy did in the interview process and how he explained the punch. To date, i think coach has done pretty well evaluating the so called character risks, and given the obvious need at the position and our strong belief in our ability to coach guys up, i dont see the problem. I also bet he is going to be good on special teams.

The Rams got a long good look at him so that works for me.

Looks like they are shotgunning the mid to late rounds - looking for guys with the physical tools that could develop. Pretty much what they did with Quick - fell in love with his physical attributes - but at least they aren't doing it at the top of the 2nd round any more.

On the plus side, if one of these guys hits he can be a real positive. Some great players came out of later rounds. And you don't get faster or have burst develop - those you need to have at the start. But its a big if.
