Honestly, he was not among my Day 3 Top 50, which included 3-4 other safeties. Not a guy on my radar, and I admittedly don't know much about him aside from what's posted here. But here's what Fisher and Snead are saying...

    St. Louis Rams ‏@STLouisRams 16s
Fisher: "We're really good right now. We're excited about this pick." #RamsDraft

    St. Louis Rams ‏@STLouisRams 5s
Snead: "Former linebacker moved to safety this spring ... there's definitely a role for this type of player in our defense." #RamsDraft

    St. Louis Rams ‏@STLouisRams 40s
Fisher on @MoYo_45: "He worked at the Edward Jones Dome as a janitor." #RamsDraft

    St. Louis Rams ‏@STLouisRams 9s
Fisher on Alexander: "There's a huge upside here ... most likely, he's active on Sunday as a special teamer." #RamsDraft

Seems like the kind of in the box safety that Williams likes..Rams are really adding guys that like to hit.

The comment that he has off the field issues and therefore is somehow a "reach" is circular and purely speculative for all the reasons i laid out above. The off the field issues are up to each team to evaluate in terms of their relevance today. None of us have the data to evaluate his explanation and what he has learned. I hope the people that wanted the Rams to draft Manziel arent complaining about the off the field issues for this guy, because as far as i can tell, we are talking about one isolated incident that was obviously a bad mistake, but who really knows what happened. There is no evidence right now of any pattern of bad behavior or drugs. In fact, i am not sure if its an off the field issue at all, its unclear if the fight happened at practice or under what circumstances. The incident is a flag to investigate, and coach and snead obviously investigated. Once you start talking about talent and the ability to evaluate a safety, with all due respect to all our resident experts, we dont know squat compared to what fisher knows.

No one can so I'm fine with that. Hey the Hawks found Sherman late right. To me this is where Les and Fisher have to earn the money and find players. If they like him and drafted him then I'm fine with that.

Last year the same response was happening when we drafted TJ.

Safety in the Kam Chancellor mould. He'll find a role in Greg Williams' defense

    Maurice Alexander Combine Video

2014 Combine workout: Maurice Alexander - NFL Videos

This guy really blew it up at the combine, so apparently the off suspension hurt him, as did the level of competition. His combine numbers compare favorably to TJ McDonalds great workout.

But he certainly has the tools, and the Rams people know the St louis area native very well, as he worked for them in 2012 while suspended.

He gets some sacks, which says his pass rush ability may be a factor here in Gregg Williams scheme.

Also should be a great ST player.

If you are a Cody Davis fan the road to a roster spot just got harder.

I agree with your general (no pun intended) point; clearly the Rams have done more investigating than us. But there was information about the incident included on the first page:

During the off-season, he punched a teammate in the face after a party, and charges were filed (the teammate subsequently underwent emergency surgery). He originally faced a second-degree felony, but he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of aggravated assault resulting in bodily injury, a class A misdemeanor. After initially being ordered to serve a year in jail, the judge suspended all but 45 days of the jail sentence.

The fact that he was kicked off the team for a year, worked as a janitor at the Ed, and then was let back on the team probably humbled him quite a bit. I don't hold the incident against him, I just didn't see him as a great value here.

But he has tools to work with, and with a good coaching staff, maybe he becomes something at the next level. Sounds like a pick that, if he pays off, it's going to be a couple of seasons down the road given that he's only spent a year at the position. But that also speaks to the fact that he's not near his ceiling yet, you'd hope. Should help on ST right away though.

Re: NFL DRAFT: With 110th pick, Rams select MO ALEXANDER (S, Utah State)

Fantastic point by Rambos (as usual). Last year when we all knew that we needed a safety, people *****ed up a storm when we took mcdonald who looked pretty darn good last year for a rookie. The further we get into the draft, the less reliable all of our amateur analysis becomes in my view. This is what professionals get paid to do, and none of us are professionals. We are all entitled to our opinions of course, but on the topic of safeties, i have no idea how we believe that we are better qualified than fisher (sorry to keep repeating myself).

This guy did not come completely out of nowhere. Remember, Kiper had him rated ahead of Reynolds. He is not a completely out of the blue pick. It's got to be a pretty humbling experience for a guy like that to find himself in jail, out of football, and then working as a janitor. I would love to know if he has any other history of behavior problems, or if it was just that one situation (ie anyone can lose their temper, i am not defending it, just saying that i trust fisher to evaluate the character issue).

Thanks for the clarification Nick on the details of the incident. I missed that.

I am fine with taking a pick with lots of upside in that spot, especially since i like the concept of getting immediate contribution on special teams.

As to whether better "value" was available in that spot, i will leave that point to those on this board that are more educated than me on draft matters, but i will say that I think Fisher and Snead are our best bet in terms of measuring "value" to the team as a combination of immediate contribution and longer term upside. There may well be guys who are more polished and better players right now, but faith in the ability to coach players up is an important concept as well.

I'm definitely rooting for the guy, he sounds humbled and really understands just how lucky he is. I'm excited to see how that translates now...will Joyner be playing primarily corner? I would assume so after this pick.

As a caveat, he was dead last in the shuttle - generally an indicator of agility. Definitely a good size/speed combo, but the agility issue could be an indicator of limitation in coverage.

But local boy makes good - that has value. Hope he makes it.
