NFL DRAFT: With 149th pick, the Rams select BRANDON MCGEE (DB, Miami)

    Overview

McGee was a high school All-American at Miamiís Plantation High School, playing quarterback as a junior before becoming the two-way threat at cornerback and receiver for his final season. He played in 10 games on special teams and as a reserve cornerback as a true freshman (two tackles). McGee played a bit more on defense as a sophomore, earning one start (opener against Florida A&M) and being credited with 15 tackles and two pass breakups on the year. He cracked the starting lineup for all 12 games in 2011, intercepting his first pass (against South Florida) and breaking up two others. In his senior season, as Miamiís top corner, McGee had a very inconsistent season, but still managed to pick off two passes and break up seven others.
    Analysis

    Strengths

Typical Miami cornerback with quick feet and good straight-line speed. Quickness evident waiting for receiver to make his move off the line, can stick with hitch routes effectively. Fluid hips help him transition well, flips open quickly to keep up down the sideline. Good recovery speed and is effective in trail over the middle. Competitiveness, and body control to knock away passes around the receiver without interfering. Shows violent hands to rip off receiver blocks in the run game, sticks his nose into tackles, wrapping when possible, on the edge and adds himself to piles. Plays boundary and field sides. Weaknesses

Has only adequate size for an outside corner. Will struggle to turn his head to find the ball at times. Leans back in his pedal too often, losing some traction when needing to plant to trail, or getting knocked out of position by contact. Needs to flatten his blitz angles, ball gets underneath him. NFL Comparison

    Jason McCourty Bottom Line

The next Miami cornerback with great speed to pique the interest of NFL scouts, McGee also presents enough size to stand up to NFL receivers on the outside. However, McGee had an up-and-down senior season, and was challenged and successfully beaten on numerous occasions. He was able to rebound his stock with a strong week of practices at the East-West Shrine Game.

Been a Miami Season ticket holder for years, and brandon mcgee is actually one of my best friends cousins. Not a flashy pic, but a solid one, definitely needs to improve his ball skills but can easily be a very solid 4th corner for us, like the pick.

Ran a 4.40 and had the highest 3 cone drill at the combine. Good depth at CB, Cecil should coach em up to find a nice role on special teams. Can't go wrong with a player from the U.

John Madden said you can never have too many CBs. With his speed, McGee should be a valuable ST guy from day 1.

Had never heard of him before today, so I'll reserve judgement until I see him play. Sounds like a good late round depth/special teams pick though.

After watching the Day 3 Press Conference, Fisher and Snead said this was DC Walton's pick with his connections still at the U. Everyone their vouched for the guy with his leadership qualities. Hopefully Walton can get him to reach his potential.
