A lot better pick this time around. Earlier this off-season Gaines was a 3rd round pick and slipped for whatever reason. He offers excellent depth and can play inside and outside. Good value and good pick!

E.J. Gaines was, at this point in the draft, my 9th ranked player. So pretty good value I think, and represents the third pick in this draft used to try and upgrade the secondary.

Love the pick in the 6th. As sosa said he was mocked to us a lot early in the process in the 3rd round. A little undersized but a quality corner.

Gaines had a strong outing against Texas A&M's Mike Evans.Evans had 4 catches for 8 yards in that game.Granted, Manziel wasn't healthy then.

    Dan Hope ‏@Dan_Hope 1m
Same here, thought #Rams might look at him in Round 4-5, good value. RT @Eric_Cooke91 I like the E.J Gaines pick. Need help in the secondary

    Alex Brown ‏@OS_AlexBrown 2m
EJ Gaines in rd 6 is steal. Gaines is exceptional versus run, well trained corner in off & zone. Lacks elite transition speed but efficient!

    Jim Thomas ‏@jthom1 2m
Gaines can play nickel or outside. Aggressive DB, did very good job against Mike Evans in Texas A&M game.

    Nick Wagoner ‏@nwagoner 3m
Rams going heavy on secondary today. No surprise, of course.

Typical Gregg Williams corner, he'll play a lot of press enough for our D-line to eat up the backfield. Has a high football IQ so his knowledge in reading routes will make him productive.

    E.J. Gaines Scouting Report

2014 NFL Draft Prospect Profile: E.J. Gaines, CB, Missouri - Big Blue View

SEC 1st team and a 6th rounder? Seems like a steal, and some project him to FS.

    Evan Silva ‏@evansilva 3m
#Rams 6th-round CB E.J. Gaines is 5'10/190 with 4.48 speed. Zone CB. Helped hold Mike Evans to 4 catches for 8 yards last November vs. TAMU.

    Nick Wagoner ‏@nwagoner 3m
Gaines can take solace in fact that he won't have to see Robinson coming to block him or Mason running at him in NFL. Except for practice...

    From Walter Football...

St. Louis Rams: E.J. Gaines, CB, Missouri: B+ Grade The Rams are taking their second cornerback of this draft, but I don't have an issue with that because it's a position that had to be addressed. I figured E.J. Gaines would be chosen a bit earlier than this, so I'm a fan of this selection.

    Overview

2013: First-team All-SEC. Finished third on team with 75 tackles. Had team-high 5 INTs. Missed two games with a leg injury. 2012: Started all 12 games. 13 tackles at UCF. 10 tackles, 1 INT at Texas A&M. 2011: First-team All-Big 12. Set school single-season record with 18 passes defensed. INT vs. Oklahoma State. 10 tackles, 4 PBU vs. Texas A&M. 2010: Played all 13 games. Had 8 tackles at Texas Tech. High School: No. 51-ranked CB (Rivals) out of Missouri. Two-time first-team All-State.

    Analysis

    Strengths
Looks the part with good muscularity and thin ankles. Fills aggressively and supports the run. Likes to hit. Plays with confidence and carries a swagger. Good attitude and football demeanor. Competes hard and brings energy to the field. Good eyes and route recognition. Has experience matching up with slot receivers in nickel coverage and has returned punts. Very good career production on the ball. Proven special teams coverage defender.

    Weaknesses

Is short and short-armed. Plays a lot into the boundary. Shows some tightness in his hips. Average transitional quickness -- lacks ideal burst and acceleration to recover and close ground. Can do a better job disengaging from blocks. Most of interception production stemmed from tips and overthrown balls (not created). Average hands.

    Bottom Line

Strong, physical zone corner with the toughness, awareness and football IQ to function highly in short spaces. A solid tackler, Gaines plays bigger than his size and takes a professional approach. Can make an immediate impact on special teams and work his way into a lineup.

I think Gaines could be the one to compete with McLeod for the FS position.

I'm feeling a lot better about our DB depth with the addition of Joyner, Alexander, Gaines and even Reid. There should be good competition for playing time and some excellent candidates for special teams roles.

Gaines said most scouts brought up his performance vs. Evans. Said it's "a little crazy" to him that he went in 6th and Evans went in 1st.

Gaines on shutting down Mike Evans: "To see him go in the first round and to see me go in the sixth is a little crazy to me." #RamsDraft
