Dont underestimate coach fisher's view that him and chuck cecil can coach up a guy like this. He has all the physical tools, sounds like he needs work on coverage technique and can already play the run. THis is the classic type of pick that fisher is going to excel at.

The Rams did their homework on Shamarko Thomas, and liked McDonald better.

Who are we to say they got it wrong?

My thought... this pick was about stopping guys like Frank Gore and Marshawn Lynch more so than it was about back end defense.

"...Is long on athleticism, but was just as long on missed tackles in 2012, taking too many bad angles. He's a strong safety-only who will need to be covered up by the scheme." -- Rotoworld

Uh, oh. But that's what NFL coaches do, help these rookies overcome their 'cons', convert to PROS.

    Re: Great 3rd round pick

Why would anyone ever think that cbs sportsline would know as much as fisher about safeties? Did cbs sportsline play safety in the nfl?

Huge shoes to fill. Craig Dahl was the hardest hitter in Rams history. Luckily for everyone in the NFL he was never able to hit anyone.

Tim Walton Rams DC... I'm sure he had a say in this and he's a great coach when it comes to the secondary.

In 14 years of college coaching, Walton coached eight defensive backs who were drafted in the first or second round, including LaRon Landry, Kenny Phillips, Antrel Rolle and Brandon Meriweather.

I'm a die hard USC fan and McDonald was used improperly last season after having solid 2010 and 2011 seasons point blank. He's a solid player just the USC defense was not sound in so many other areas last year it affected McDonald's play.

Re: NFL DRAFT: With 71st pick, Rams select safety T.J. McDonald (USC)

Rams' new safety has ***** connection

    By Mike Sando | ESPN.com

St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher was the secondary coach for San Francisco in 1993 when the ***** added safety Tim McDonald, who would become a six-time Pro Bowl choice and Super Bowl champion.

Fisher and the Rams are bringing McDonald's son to St. Louis as a potential starting safety. T.J. McDonald is 6-foot-2 and 219 pounds. He has exceptional athletic ability, as reflected by a 40-inch vertical leap.

The younger McDonald, chosen 71st overall Friday, should have a chance to start for the Rams as a rookie. The Rams released Quintin Mikell and watched fellow starting safety Craig Dahl leave in free agency. They needed to draft a safety and waited until the ninth pick of the third round to do so.

St. Louis also holds the 92nd, 113th, 149th, 184th and 198th choices. The team could still use help at guard and running back. Other primary needs at receiver, linebacker and safety have been addressed, although the Rams could use another safety through the draft or in free agency.

"You're talking about the offspring of a famous father with NFL pedigree. This guy will take your head off. When he's in the box and tackling, he'll be an absolutely physical presence. The only negative is he has some stiffness, which a lot of tall defensive backs have. But I love his physicality." -- Mike Mayock

The Rams don't play a SS FS type system do they? I thought they played as a 1st or 2nd.

I think this kids huge. Putting him behind a front sever that also now include Ogletree (who is a large converted saftey with cover skills), and the CBs (strong position IMO) and this kid fits real nice.

The defense should dare Kap and Wilson to scramble. Heck, Lynch and Gore won't want to break through to the second level of this defense cause they will get the hammer.

I'm going to hope for the best with McDonald. Definitely a big physical presence, and if Walton can improve his coverage skills, we'll have something. He can get after the quarterback, and should be useful trying to contain the likes of Kaepernick and Wilson.

He has all the tools to make some improvements in his game once he hits an NFL field. Watching SC games, he truly stood out as a vocal leader for a young Trojan football team. Nice pick up Fisher, I wonder if he'll go back to L.A. and grab Johnathan Franklin tomorrow? We'll see how confident we stand in our safety and RB cores.
