When I saw this pick I imagined him in the role of Mikell last year, that of an in the box safety, creating pressure in the backfield on occasion. I think this guy is a perfect fit for that part of Fisher's scheme. I know we all want a center fielder safety, but this guy fits perfectly into how Fisher runs his defense. I think he'll step in nicely for Mikell.

Lets not forget Rambo, Thomas, and Wolfe are all still available.

    Edit

    The kid can really hit.

    Double edit:
AND he wants to get a big hit on our rivals greatest player Jerry Rice.

if he simply gets fine tuned, which i think he will, he'll be a MUCH better player

if they can also convince him to go ball first, so many interceptions

I saw this guy play quite a bit. Solid player. Had an inkling The Rams were interested when Snead showed up for the USC Pro day & there didn't seem to be any other players there they might have been looking at.
The whiner connection is interesting. Wasn't his dad- a terrific player whom we all loved to hate- the guy who did that weird chicken dance after he made a play ? Gonna be a weird thing for him to watch junior sporting the horns.

i admit he looks pretty good but i thought they were planning to use Darian Stewart in this kind of role and look for a coverage safety in the draft as a bigger need.

QB he'd most like to intercept in history? - Steve Young
WR he'd most like to lay the wood on in history? - Jerry Rice.

You know what, I forgot about TJ! As I don't always watch USC, more a UCLA fan but I remember him from 2011. As Bruce4life said he was played out of position last season. He has been all conference all-american! This guy can play and has all the tools to be what I envisioned we needed in an Eric Reid kinda player! I love the pick and he does not need much coaching up, even though he will get it from our excellent staff! I agree with those of you guys who think we should still draft another safety and hope we do. Can we envision TJ and Alec O. hunting the scrambling QB's in our division... I so want to do some old Batman (Wham-Ohs & Kah Blams)! Going to be a blast watching our Defense in hunt mode...

I see what Fisher was going for here. He realizes the potential McDonald holds. He seen the size and ability to mold him, so he took him. I think they (Cecil probably the most) wanted this pick badly, because now they mold him to whatever they want him to be. As of right now, the pick wasn't so good. But if they give him adequate coaching, he can be a great safety.

Sosa, why do you say that as of right now, the pick wasnt so good? The pick filled an important need. Fisher has scouted this guy for two years (see the article posted on the board). This is the guy fisher targeted. He was the safety that fisher thought was best. Are you suggesting that it wasnt a good pick now because you, mayock, kiper, etc had other safeties rated more highly?

I think when it comes to safety of all positions on the field, we ought to all agree that fisher, as a former safety himself, has an awful lot more expertise than anyone else we are reading about or listening to ranking these guys.

No disrespect sosa, i really like your posts and you are certainly entitled to your opinion, i just dont see how in this particular case we can second guess fisher before anyone even sees the kid play a down in the nfl.

Yes, I don't particularly love the pick because to me T.J McDonald is 100% a one dimensional player. To me, you don't get a guy like T.J McDonald unless you have an Ed Reed playing centrefield (Think Bernard Pollard). Fisher and Snead have a plan, and for all I know they could plan on bringing Mikell back tomorrow, or are going to draft another guy today, but to me the pick I believe there were plenty of better safeties still on the board.

I would have liked Phillip Thomas from Fresno St. there. I think the pick right now to me is iffy, but like I said, Fisher, Cecil, and Tim Walton get to completely mold McDonald the way they please.

but tj just needs the right coaches, fisher and co. are perfect to unlock his potential

I kind of felt the same way when the pick was announced. He always looked more like a LB than S to me, but like you said, Fisher and Snead have a plan, so I'm going to trust their judgement.

Actually that was Merton Hanks, who used his elongated neck to accent his chicken dance, and yes, we all loved to hate him.

Something else to consider: While it might not be expected based on his skillset, I wouldn't be completely shocked if Fisher is looking at that athleticism and projecting McDonald as a potential free safety with Stewart still a possible starter at strong safety.

There are still plenty of safety prospects left that could fill the FS role, , but I dunno, just thinking outside the box (pun intended).
