    NFL Working on Williams' Possible Reinstatement ..

    Sporting News Staff Report

    The NFL is working with representatives for St. Louis Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams on a plan for Williams’ possible reinstatement, NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reported Wednesday.

    Williams was suspended indefinitely last month for offering cash rewards to New Orleans Saints players for delivering hits that injured opponents. The program lasted three seasons (2009 through 2011) while Williams was the Saints' defensive coordinator.

    Talks between league officials and Williams' people have focused on the conditions Williams must meet before he can apply for reinstatement to commissioner Roger Goodell, La Canfora reported. Williams can apply for reinstatement as early as February 2013, following the Super Bowl. Gregg Williams could be back coaching as early as next February.

    Williams apologized for his actions after he was suspended last month and said he took "full responsibility" for them. He also said he would cooperate with the league and its ongoing investigation, and serve as an advocate for player safety and sportsmanship.

    The so-called "bountygate" scandal also resulted in the suspensions of Saints head coach Sean Payton (one year), general manager Mickey Loomis (eight games) and interim coach Joe Vitt (six games).

    Rams head coach Jeff Fisher has said he would be willing to bring back Williams, who served under Fisher with the Titans.
