Nick’s ClanRam 2012 NFL Power Rankings: Midseason

Some away-from-computer responsibilities prevented me from updating the Power Rankings last week, so I thought this would be a good opportunity for me to take a step back and examine how things look at the midseason point.

Teams are beginning to separate themselves, with some consistent contenders in the Top 6-8 spots, some teams that are hanging around the middle, and others that just can’t seem to string much success together.

Some surprise storylines of the 2012 NFL season so far…

-The Atlanta Falcons are the only undefeated team left standing, and so far, appear to be the class of the NFL. Matt Ryan is having a career season so far, though Julio Jones hasn’t quite overtaken Roddy White as the top receiver as some thought he would.

-Minnesota may be the most surprising five-win team out there. They’d be atop the NFC North if it wasn’t for Chicago, and have rebounded nicely from their three-win 2011 campaign.

-Pittsburgh is an interesting team sitting at .500. They’ve lost some games they should have won, but remain a tough test for anyone they face. Beating division rival Cincinnati last weekend was a good victory, but the toughest part of their schedule is yet to come.

-The NFC West is currently stacked exactly how it finished last year, but no longer is this division the doormat of the NFL. San Francisco is a legitimate Super Bowl contender, and the other three organizations can stand with just about anyone on any given Sunday.

-Robert Griffin III is having an outstanding rookie campaign. He’s third in the league in QB rating, and leads the league in both completion percentage and yards per attempt. Still, he hasn’t caused a complete turnaround for Washington quite yet, as their 3-4 record puts them at the bottom of the NFC East.

-What’s going on, Detroit? You lost six games all of last season, and in 2012, you’ve already lost four of the six you’ve played. As the only team in the NFC North with a losing record, you’ve got a tough journey ahead of you.

-With Andrew Luck at the helm, Indianapolis’ 3-3 record is second best in the AFC South behind only Houston. Luck’s numbers aren’t as good as Griffin’s, but when you watch him play, it’s easy to see why he was as hyped as he was. The flashes of potential greatness are definitely there.

-Kansas City, you’d better start scouting quarterbacks in the 2013 draft. The Chiefs’ 1-5 record is among the worst in the league, and they’ve now committed to starting Brady Quinn over a healthy Matt Cassel. If you’re on the coaching staff or in the front office at KC, might want to polish up your resume.

This is killing my fantasy teamS... Defenses are taking either JJ or Roddy out of the game plan, and it is usually JJ...

    This space for rent...

The Vikings will be dropping down this list like a lead sinker!
