    Nick’s Notes:August 12, 2008

    MEQUON , Wis. –

    Notes from Tuesday Morning

    - You can see the light at the end of the training camp tunnel after Tuesday’s morning practice. The Rams are scheduled for an afternoon workout later today and a workout Wednesday afternoon. It’s expected that the team will not practice here Thursday and return to St. Louis in the morning.

    - The past two practices have been very crisp and the intensity has picked back up after Saturday night’s loss to Tennessee . The Rams know there is plenty of work to be done and they need a strong showing Saturday night against San Diego to build some confidence.

    - Dick Vermeil’s camp visit wrapped up Tuesday morning after he watched another practice. Vermeil spoke to the team last night and coach Scott Linehan described it as “passionate.” There’s no doubt that it was a stirring speech that left an impression on many of the players. Cornerback Tye Hill called it inspirational.

    - It was good to meet coach Vermeil and get a chance to sit down with him. I didn’t have the fortune of covering any of his teams but it sure would have been fun.

    - The defensive line struggled Saturday night as acknowledged by Linehan but the one on one pass rush drills Tuesday morning didn’t inspire much more confidence. The brightest spot was clearly end Victor Adeyanju. Even with a club that looks like a white boxing glove on his hand, Adeyanju was outstanding in pass rush drills. If he gets that area of his game right, he’s going to be tough to keep off the field.

    - Cornerback Ron Bartell is perennially overlooked. Although he’s no Pro Bowler, he provides plenty to this team. Take Tuesday morning for example. Bartell is playing with the first team defense at corner, opposite Tye Hill. When the team goes to the nickel, he moves into the slot as the nickel back. And with so many injuries across the back line, he switched to safety with the backups. Bartell is bigger this year, around 215 pounds and has had a solid camp.

    - You could tell free safety Oshiomogho Atogwe was back on the practice field. Although his reps were limited, he was his usual, pesky self playing through every whistle and even a little after. At one point, he frustrated running back Lance Ball to the point that he shoved Atogwe’s face away from him.

    - Looking to see some veteran leadership? After the first string defense left the field following team drills, defensive tackle La’Roi Glover, end Leonard Little and safety Corey Chavous took young linebacker Quinton Culberson aside and showed him how to better handle a previous situation. Culberson ate up the attention. Those are the kinds of things that can make a young player better.

    - Rookie wideout Matt Caddell made a nice touchdown catch in traffic during team drills and Marc Bulger hit Drew Bennett on a nice deep out for a score for a couple of highlights.

    - That’s all for this morning. Be back in the afternoon with more.

Drew Bennett caught a pass? Impressive lol. Glade to here about the vet leadership, and I hope Bartell shows something this year. He is really talented.

What? No credit from the doubters when Bennett makes a big play?

There's no shortage of comments when a report comes in of a drop.

    T.M.I. Sam....

There doesn't seem to be much moderation when it comes to the players/coaches eh?

There do seem so be plenty of folk who think that the bright thing up in the sky during daylight hours is simply there to cast shadows...

I hope things pick up on the defensive line. It's good to see Adeyanju is making progress. Though I would like Long to start there, who ever is better deserves the spot. We need a good pass rush this year.

Glad to see Atogwe is back. We need him and Witherspoon bad. To me, they're our defensive captains because they are the only probowl caliber players out there.
