The Niners are more than just a rival

The Niners have been and always will be more than just a sports rival.

I have 2 Uncles, 2 Aunts and 7 cousins that live in the bay area.

    I love everyone of them.

But, can't stand any of them.

Hell, my Father got a divorce over the Rams and Niners.

(never has a son been so proud).

When we were sucking gas from 1990 to 1998.

My ultimate Sunday is when we won and the Niners lost. (that didn't happen much, but, when it did).

I love the 1982 game (knocking them out of the playoffs). The 1985 mnf game beating them in frisco and winning the division.

The 1988 sunday night game. The 1990 win that ended the niners winning streak. 1999 game when the saying "same ol Rams" stopped.

Here is one of my most cherished wins.

The 1973 season was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Los Angeles Rams.

Coming off their first losing season since 1965.

The Rams have a new owner, new coach, new QB and even new uniforms.

The first game of the 73 season was in KC.

The Chiefs were a 8 point favorite.

    The Rams dominated the game.

    But, the experts weren't impressed.

Wait until they play Atlanta next week.

The experts picked the Falcons to win the west.

They thought so little of the Rams that the Falcons were favored by 2.

And the game was in LA.

    Rams 31 Atlanta 0.

The experts still were not impressed.

They said wait until they play a veteran playoff team in their stadium.

Game three was frisco in frisco

The niners were 5 point favorite.

The Rams took the opening kickoff to the Niner 16 yard line.

David Ray makes the FG for a 3-0 Ram lead.

The Niners drive to the one yard line of the Rams and score.

For the first time that season the Rams were losing.

    That lasted around 9 seconds.

Cullen Bryant takes the kickoff 93 yards and the rout was on.

The Rams rushed for over 255 yards.

John Hadl was over 80% in completions.

They dominated on offense so great they only punted one time for the entire game.

    Here is the scary part.

The Ram defense was even better.

Sacking John Brodie and Steve Spurrier 7 times.

    Intercepting 3 passes.

And only giving the Niners 8 first downs.

The Rams showed the NFL they were for real with a 40-20 whipping of the Niners.

It was the beginning of a Ram dynasty and the fall of frisco.

The next day the LA Herald Examiner (greatest sport section especially if you were a ramfan).

In bold headlines it said THE RAMS ARE THE NEW NFL MONSTERS.

    I still have it.

It was the beginning of 7 great seasons

Agreed, best Sports Section. I used to buy the Examiner just for the sports section.

7 consecutive divisional championships. Still a record! (Cowboys or Vikings were always in our way though).

I to have fond memories of that era. but what really cracks me up, is all the niner fans here in the bay area that have amnesia when it comes to the seventies! :r

Are you serious? Actually it's biblical...being a whiner fan would be considered by most here a form of adultery.

Re: The Niners are more than just a rival

    Let me explain.

My parents were married for 30 years.

My Mom loses her battle with cancer.

My Dad went kind of goofy (lonely) for 2 years.

Then he meets Lorraine from the bay area. And they decide to get married.

My Dad had pretty deep pockets, but, Lorraine had deeper ones.

Lorraine wanted a big wedding, and got it. Cost for the wedding and reception was around 75,000 (my Dad would say lorraine paid for it, but, I know he did).

They have been married for less than 3 months when Cindy (my wife) and I pay them a visit.

It happened to be the weekend of the Ram-Cowboy 1980 playoff game.

Right when the game started, Lorraine's nephew, Chad (he was 20) walks in.

Our Rams were getting hammered by Dallas.

Every time Dallas did something good or the Rams did something bad, this punk would scream "YEAH, YEAH, YEAH".

It's not my house and I don't know these people well so I turned the other cheek.

    Then this happened.

Dorsett fumbles the ball and you see Ram and Cowboy players scrambling for it.

I get about an inch from the TV hoping the Rams recover, they don't.

Dallas gets the ball back. Her Nephew puts his index finger two inches from my face and screams "YEAH, YEAH, YEAH".

I snap and say to him "I am going to knock your fxxxx teeth down your throat".

Lorraine, who was in the Living room, heard me and wants to know what going on?

I say to her "Your slug for a nephew is a worm".

My Dad tells me to shaddup.

The slug leaves the four of us go out to dinner.

Me and Cindy head back home.

Within 30 minutes of when we left, Lorraine and my Dad get into it.

It was over the Rams, Niners and the slug.

My Dad gets into his Jaguar and heads back to his home in Fresno.

They never see each other again and divorce (married for less than 3 months)

My Dad would have a few drinks and say "You know those God Damn Rams cost me a divorce".

    Man, do I miss him.

Re: The Niners are more than just a rival

Yes, I too have bitter memories of the ******. My first NFL, and Ram game was back in 74' vs the *****. I remember attending many Ram /***** games in Anaheim only to watch the ****** prevail.
It always seamed that I would end up sitting behind bandwagon ***** fans in our own home.

My brother, a Ram fan was temporarily married, (and a few years later, divorced) to a ***** fan.

Many years of suffering from 81-98 followed, but 99' was such a glorious year, and the years that followed until last years disaster.

But this year will be different. I hope some of the vet players such as Pace, Bulger, and Little emphasize to the new teammates the importance of winning this game. It is not just a division rival; this game should be won for all the long time fans who had to endure the suffering over the years of that evil(cheating) organization.

AMEN!! This is a blood fued that has ebbed and flowed lately, but those of us who had to put up with the whiner's and their fans in the eighties and nineties will never take these games lightly. I don't care how many TD's we score or don't score, how close the game is, THIS IS A MUST WIN!

Yeah, so did I. I used to buy it when I lived in So. Cal. My two favorite columnists were Doug Krikorian (Son of Krikor) and Allan Malamud. Remember how Krikorian used to call Rams coach John Robinson "Robocoach"? It was a sad day when that paper folded (no pun intended.)

    I did, Evil.

I did not realize that people actually read and seem to have appreciated my drivel until I was checking my personal options and saw I had some props in there.

I appreciate the support and intend to show more for those taking the time and effort to keeping us fellow Rams fans informed on here!
