No compensatory draft picks for St. Louis Rams
By Jim Thomas
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
DANA POINT, CALIF. _ For the first time since 2002, the St. Louis Rams will not have any compensatory picks in the draft. The league announced 32 compensatory draft picks Monday (to 16 teams), starting with New England at the end of the third round (No. 97) overall, and ending with Mr. Irrelevant, which goes to Kansas City with the last pick of the draft (seventh round, No. 256 overall).
The compensatory pick system was initiated to aid teams which lost more or better players through free agency than they gained. The signing of offensive guard Jacob Bell by the Rams last year to a $36 million contract in free agency far outweighed any free agents lost by the team. As a result, the Rams received no compensatory picks.
Since the compensatory pick system was insituted in 1994, the Rams have received 25 such picks, among them linebacker David Vobora, wide receiver Derek Stanley, guard Mark Setterstrom, and fullback Madison Hedgecock.

I can't remember so well...who did the Patriots lose to warrant a third round draft pick?

Re: No compensatory draft picks for St. Louis Rams
Well see it turns out that Roger Goodell missed one of the special appointments he has to privately see Bill Belichiek and decided that to make up for his bad behavior he will just help out his lover's team out some more with the addition of any picks that he feels that would make up for time lost.
OK so I did a little research before I decided to post that and it turns out that comp picks are from last years free agent losses. So basically they got a third rounder for Asante Samuel which makes sense I suppose. So that means Jason Brown signing will affect us next year not this year. I guess Jacob Bell is the true reason we dont get any comp picks.
(Disclaimer: I don't know more about football than Jim Thomas, just basing that on some hasty internet searches.)

So we should do pretty well in the picks department next year, with the loss of Torry Holt and Orlando Pace? Or does it not work for cuts?

The Pats lost Assante Samuel to the Eagles.
Compensatory picks won't be awarded for the release of players like Holt and Pace.
Welcome to the St. Louis Rams!

Re: No compensatory draft picks for St. Louis Rams
No, and next year we probably won't either with our only potential losses being Cogs and Vic. And even if they both left town, it would most likely be well offset by the additions of Brown, Butler, & Karney (sounds like a law firm).
To be honest, I take this as a good sign...........the FA trade deficit may be turning."Before the gates of excellence the high gods have placed sweat; long is the road thereto and rough and steep at first; but when the heights are reached, then there is ease, though grievously hard in the winning." --- Hesiod
