Nutten, Terrell are necks of kin
By Bill Coats
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
Friday, Nov. 11 2005
To say that veteran Tom Nutten and rookie Claude Terrell are neck-and-neck for
the Rams' starting left guard job might imply the wrong meaning.
Sure, they're competing for the spot. But each has been slowed recently by a
neck injury. Nutten's is the latest, and potentially the most serious. Exams
this week disclosed a bulging disc that could require postseason surgery. "But
if I don't take it to an extreme level, it shouldn't," said Nutten, who had
neck surgery in 1998. "With time, it should heal by itself."
Nutten, 34, said he'd been bothered for several weeks. "For some reason, during
the bye week when I wasn't doing anything it just got worse and worse," he
said. He didn't practice Thursday or Friday.
Nutten started the first five games of the season, then Terrell, a fourth-round
draft pick from New Mexico, took over for two games. Terrell sprained his neck
Oct. 23 vs. New Orleans, and Nutten moved back into the lineup vs. Jacksonville.
Terrell, who figures to start Sunday, said: "I'm excited to get back out there.
It's a big game for us, on the road in a hostile environment. You've got to
love that. I'll be ready to rock and roll."
Nutten, who was listed as questionable on Friday's injury report, said he
wasn't ruling himself out, either. "I'm still hoping," he said. "It's really
not threatening; just the level of pain is still there, and contact, obviously,
is one of the triggers. So, I'm just kind of taking it day-by-day, and we'll
see what happens."
Ram-blings
The Seahawks could be without two starting linebackers, both nursing knee
injuries. Darren Sharper has been ruled out, and D.D. Lewis was listed Friday
as questionable. Two other defensive starters, safety Michael Boulware
(hamstring) and defensive tackle Marcus Tubbs (calf), also were questionable.
