The Official Michael Sam "Off-the-Field" Thread

The Mods have decided to initiate this thread, which will be the ONLY THREAD to post your thoughts on the implications of the Rams' decision to draft Michael Sam, the first openly homosexual player to be drafted into the NFL.

While Michael Sam, the football player, can be discussed elsewhere, if you wish to express an opinion on Michael Sam's sexual orientation or how that might impact his effort to make the St. Louis Rams' squad, this is the place.

This thread will be HEAVILY MODERATED to ensure that it remains constructive, respectful, and free from personal attacks. Posts that cross these lines will be deleted.

We look forward to your thoughful comments and an intelligent discussion regarding an important social issue that will play out at Rams Park.

To get the discussion going, I will pose this question:

Kurt Warner, who has always been vocal regarding his Christian beliefs, has yet to make any public statement (as far as I know) regarding the selection of Michael Sam by his former team. Should he and, if so, what should he say? Would it be better for him to simply refrain from comment?

Note that in asking this question, I make no presumption that, as a Christian, Kurt would necessarily oppose Sam's selection. In fact, I know several devout Christians who are supporting the decision.

    Thoughts?

Re: The Official Michael Sam "Off-the-Field" Thread

I am a Christian and this is hard to explain. I care, and I don't care.

He is owning this and that is great. He was drafted by the Rams and that is fine. It really doesn't matter who he's attracted too, it only matters that he can compete at the pro level.

I don't think he can without a PS stint. 17 benches by him says to me that he needs to get stronger. His run time says to me that he needs to be working out more. His quick first step says to me that there is potential. IMO, he has a lot of work to do and the Rams are not a soft roster for this DE or DPR to crack.

The Rams did him no favors, he's got his work cut out for him and I hope he pours himself into getting better. I really hope he succeeds.....as a football player and as a person.

I think that the PDA was a bit much. I doubt I'd feel differently if it had been McCarron and Webb. My son and daughter thought it was gross, but they think their mom and dad kissing is gross too. There is a place for that though, I just don't wish to be there, no offense.

Good luck Sam, this fan is rooting for you. Now go get to work!

Re: The Official Michael Sam "Off-the-Field" Thread

plain and simple, he didn't choose to be this way, this is who he IS

can't change him, don't need to

he's a human being first who is also a football player who happens to be gay, honestly, sexuality should be based pretty low on the "who you are" scale

judging a person by ones sexuality is one of the lowest things a person could do REGARDLESS of beliefs

if he's the nicest guy ever WHY would you EVEN CONSIDER not liking him cause he's gay...come on

grow up and see him as a person for cryin out loud

i mean, judging a person for their skin color is low for many reasons
sexuality is just that as well...it's something that doesn't hurt anyone

k, unless i forgot something that's all i should say about it

    that said...

    good luck sam

Re: The Official Michael Sam "Off-the-Field" Thread

as for kurt warner, it would hurt if he put that against sam

but i don't see kurt being that type of person...just no way
I mean Kurt can do whatever about it, he could refrain from commenting or make a comment..his choice

I also think it was a really good thing for that kiss to be on national tv

kids need to see that, it helps the next generation care even less about one's sexuality

being around kids and all, they truly don't care, it's a learned hate, in fact,
once their questions are answered it's like it never came up sometimes

it's just "oh, okay" and they go on their merry way and do what they were doing or ask about dinner lol

Kudos to the Mods for allowing this thread, delicate and/or polemic as it may be. Clanram quality.

I actually have an football thought regarding Michael Sam...with the news that Mason Brodine is moving to TE Sam becomes the favourite for the 5th DE spot if like last year the Rams decide to keep 5 DEs.

Was not aware of that change but so far the move has TE potential for the Rams and Brodine. Don't know if he's had any experience at tight end. DL conformation will no doubt come into play.

The Rams have converted DE Mason Brodine to tight end.

Brodine had less than zero chance of making the Rams with them so loaded at defensive line. The position switch gives him at least a puncher's chance. He's now one of four tight ends on the team. Brodine is 6-foot-7 and 284 pounds.

My only issue is the media circus. We had 12 draftees and I think each and everyone should be judged on their footballs skills on the field and staying off the front page in their personal life (re Aldon smith, Krapernick). I felt bad for the team that drafted Johnny Foosball but honestly, i can see the Sam story having more legs then what the Browns our experiencing. Just do not want it to become a spectacle that takes away from the football skills ALL Rams must learn and display.

Re: The Official Michael Sam "Off-the-Field" Thread

I warned people about this months ago (particularly the player himself, not that he read this, lol). He said he came out so he could control his story...Well, you can't. Homosexuality is something that gets used and abused by all manner of political entities, political agendas, or people out to prove how "liberal" and "diverse" they are.

The last thing half these people care about is his football skills.

I certaintly hope this doesn't blow up in Sam's face. He knew he was in for a rough ride i'm sure, but I almost expect this to be like the first women in the military. He may have to work harder than anyone else. I sort of feel like he's sacrificed himself (by coming out pre-draft) for the cause. Good for you Michael Sam.

Re: The Official Michael Sam "Off-the-Field" Thread

I am not a Christian person. But I know that this is written in the bible: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. So I do not understand how there can be so much hatred towards a person just because they have a different sexual orientation. As long as they do not molested anyone.

If he can play and make the team great pickup for us. Else I am happy that once again Ram's made history by doing the bold move. I will root for Sam the same way I do for all Rams players, actually I have a easier time rooting for him then I had for players like Leonard Little who killed a person will DUI and then again later was arrested for DUI....

I am pretty sure that Fisher and co can handle the media stuff and keep the team focused on what is important, namely beating the crap out of the NFC West!

The good news: There's more talk about the Rams.
The bad news: It's all about ONE Ram.

    He's the new Tebow.
