Our secondary not so bad after all...

Although our secondary has been much criticized this year, I think it actually has been our strength on our less than stellar D. On paper, our secondary looks below average but even with injuries to players, our secondary for the most part has held up well. Even with little to no pass rush, our pass defense ranks 8th in the NFL, above defenses such as Baltimore, San Diego, New England, Seattle and Denver. A lot of that contributes to our lack of strength on rush defense, but on the flip side, our secondary shouldn’t be blamed for RBs getting through the front 7 untouched, leading to big gains. This opportunistic group combined for 11 interceptions and 4 Fumble recoveries and it seems to tighten up in the endzone as we have been fortunate to get many interceptions as the opponents are driving inside our 20 (bend but don’t break). Brown, although inconsistent at times, has been a good FA signing for Haslett as he has played adequately as our #1 corner. Hill is up and coming & improving as his 3 interceptions tie him for the rookie lead. Fisher, our scapegoat of the year, played about average and not as bad as people thought and Bartell has played solid in limited opportunities (should have had an interception last week, but wiped out by Little’s penalty). Chavous provides leadership to this young group and is an upgrade over Arch and Atogwe with his 3 interceptions, plays his heart out game in and out (remember the game against Seattle when he chased down Wallace) although he has some tackling issues. Overall, our secondary, despite its inconsistencies and injuries, has performed above their talent level and has been a bright and opportunistic part of our D. It will be crucial for them to perform well in our Monday nighter for us to have a chance against Grossman and co.

I guess thats the irony of it all. Unfortunately no one really rates one part of the defense...people tend to criticize one defense as a whole. And though we have a Top 10 pass defense...what has it really done to help the defense? Not much because the whole time teams are running the ball on us!!

Our pass defense is ranked eighth because teams don't need to throw the ball on us with our horrible run defense. You'll also notice that the Rams are the third lowest team in terms of opponent's pass attempts. Teams have no need to throw the ball a lot against us when we give up five yards per carry and 153 yards per game on average every weekend.

Part of the reason that our pass defense is ranked higher is because teams know they can run on us so they don't need to pass against us. It's just an illusion that makes it look like our pass D is better than it really is. We don't get any pass rush so teams could throw on us if they wanted to, but why do that when they can run on us.

The reason the Rams are 8th in passing defense is easy. Teams don't need to pass against the Rams since they're so bad against the run. If you look at the numbers you will see that the Rams are 3rd lowest in passing attempts against. As an example, the Rams average 188.4 yards passing per game and 328 total pass attempts against. The Bears average 162.3 yards passing per game and 393 total pass attempts against. I think that if the Rams run D was a little better opposing teams would then light up the Rams passing D. Why? The entire D does in fact stink. Other than some picks this season, who have the Rams pass D looked good against? Most QB's look pretty solid against us.

As a side note the Rams face the NFL's 2nd ranked D this week and 3rd overall next week in Oakland.

I'd have to say that the pass defence stat is skewed by the run defence being so appallingly inept. That said, it's interesting to note that they've picked off a respectable number of passes considering the lack of consistent pressure from the front seven.

well you see the reason that stat is misleading is because most teams dont really need to throw the ball at us considering we give up 4-6 yards a...... a..... oh.. *ahem*...

There is a bit of irony though. One of the best defensive Free Agents this offseason is a CB... Tightening up our Run D will be a bit tougher than throwing money out there in free agency.

Yea, BUT you have to atleast see the bright side that WHEN they do throw the ball, we don't have a pass rush and our Cornerbacks and Safeties hold there own out there.

Hold their own? Based on what? Since the bye week, opposing quarterbacks are averaging a 97.14 QB rating against this defense through the air, and have thrown for nine touchdowns with only three interceptions. Two of those three picks came in one game against Alex Smith. Exactly what am I supposed to be impressed with here?

This is deceiving, why would anyone pass the ball against us when they can run the ball downour throats.

Our CBs are good and we have great depth. Our Safeties are killing us they can't tackle and are no help in the run game.

We still can't play a decent zone to save our lives.

This is a great point about the int's. Based on the inability to stop the run, we really don't know how good or bad our secondary is.

Re: Our secondary not so bad after all...

The final inditement for our woeful defense will come on monday night when Grossman who is playing terribly at the moment, just has to hand the ball off to beat us because of our porous run defense.. Any team facing the Bears would want to keep the ball in his hand's and force him to throw, but we aren't capable of this...That sum's up our season on the defense and that's the reason the pass defense doesn't look that bad on the stats, because you don't need to pass to beat us..AS for the secondary i'm tired of watching these guys tackling thin air or just whiffing on tackles and ending up lying on their butt's,they just aren't physical enough...:l
