Pace/Texans have all but agreed to terms / rotoworld.com

NFL Network reports the Texans and Orlando Pace all but agreed to terms on a contract. If the Texans and Rams can agree on compensation, he'll be in Houston by Wednesday.

It looks like it will happen. Houston is willing to give up the #13 overall pick in the draft and has two third-rounders possibly available. The Rams want two first rounders, but are expected to settle for less. Terrible news for Marc Bulger; great news for David Carr. Mar. 14 - 7:45 pm et
It'll be interesting to see if the Rams are willing to take compensation or if they'll hold firm and keep Pace. At this point, it's up to the organization. If they hold out and don't accept a trade, Pace stays... unless the Texans sign him and relinquish two first round picks.

If they do end up trading Pace, they better have a backup plan for some major O-line help. It'd be one headache gone but a bigger one created come September for this offense.

Come on Jay... let's do some more magic !!!!!!

that the Texans and Pace have agreed in principal to a deal. No one has contacted the Rams yet, as of 7:24 pm. No offer sheet on the table because the Texans don't want to lost two first picks. Looks like a stalemate. The Rams wont take less than the mandatory two picks.

    From Bernie M...

It's being viewed as an attempt by his new agents to gain some leverage on the Rams.

Zygmunt and Shaw, however, really respect his new agents. The Rams say the agents are real pros. But they are agents. And they are free to drum up interest elsewhere.

If the Rams can't get Pace signed by the end of March 15 (tomorrow), they can negotiate with him again starting July 15. Until they sign him, long term, he will count $8.4 million against the 2005 cap. They can sign him between March 16 and July 14, but if so, they lose their power to use their franchise tag on another player for as many years as are in a Pace contract. (in other words: six-year deal, no tag for six years).

If Houston offers Pace, the Rams can match the offer, and if they do so, they'll still keep the power to use the tag. If they don't match, Houston owes STL two No. 1s -- unless the teams work out other terms.

I know Pace isn't popular these days, but the Rams need him. There aren't any worthwhile LTs on the free-agent market. They could draft a rookie, but a rookie would have an easier time of it at RT.

    No Pace?

    How's thisfor a line?

    LT Grant Williams
    LG Saipaia
    C McCollum
    RG Timmerman
    RT Tercero

    Yikes.

That's why the Rams will still make a major effort to retain Pace.

    Cheers,
    Bernie

Re: Pace/Texans have all but agreed to terms / rotoworld.com

    From the HERD board...

Steve Savard is on KTRS and he said he talked to Zygmunt today and he said that Martz and Ziggy are on the same page on this and that is they want to keep Pace and the only way he leaves is if the Texans or anyone else signs him to an offer sheet and the Rams will take two #1's. Sounded like there have been no talks with the Texans and Pace and his agent are just looking to see what someone else will pay him.

Savard also said that someone else in the organization told him that the Rams have made a couple of offers to Pace with the latest one being nearly identical to Walter Jones deal and apparently that was NOT good enough.

So right now it is up to Pace. If he wants to be here he has gotten an offer like Jones signed. Otherwise he tries to get a deal somewhere else or decides to sit on his (rear) for another offseason.
Randy said he [John McClain of the Houston Chronical] called in while off the air and he says the Texans will not give up two #1's. So unless there is some negotiations maybe he stays here, although I just can't see the Rams doing that no matter what they might say right now. Once these situations get to a point where another team talks to a player and they agree on a deal it normally happens.

So I think the Rams come away with a player (Wand) a 1st and 2nd or a 3rd. I just think there will be too much animosity at this point if indeed the Texans and Pace have agreed to a contract number.
