PD on Schottenheimer & Search for DC

Jacksonville asks permission to interview Schottenheimer
12 hours ago • By Jim Thomas

As he enters his second offseason as Rams head coach, Jeff Fisher could have both coordinator positions in limbo.

Late Thursday afternoon, Jacksonville requested permission to interview Brian Schottenheimer for its head-coaching position. That job became open Thursday morning when the Jaguars fired Mike Mularkey after just one season on the job.

Schottenheimer, 39, interviewed for the Jaguars’ head-coaching job a year ago after Jack Del Rio’s dismissal, so somebody in the organization must like him even though Jacksonville has a new general manager in David Caldwell.

San Francisco offensive coordinator Greg Roman is considered the front-runner for the Jacksonville job, but Schottenheimer almost certainly will be interviewed first by the Jaguars because the ***** are still in the playoffs. After a first-round bye, San Francisco plays host to Green Bay in the divisional round Saturday night.

If Schottenheimer leaves after just one season in St. Louis, Rams quarterback Sam Bradford will be forced to work with his fourth coordinator in four NFL seasons. When initial speculation surfaced last month on the possibility of Schottenheimer being a head-coaching candidate, Fisher said the Rams’ offensive system would remain the same even if Schottenheimer left.

Maybe so, but Bradford would have to get to know and mesh with yet another personality. Fisher could always promote from within, namely quarterbacks coach Frank Cignetti, who has extensive coordinator’s experience on the college level. But it’s expected that Fisher would hire from outside the organization if Schottenheimer left. Last year, Fisher also interviewed former Oakland head coach Hue Jackson for the Rams’ coordinator job and was said to be very impressed with Jackson although he ultimately hired Schottenheimer.

Meanwhile, things appear to be quiet on the defensive coordinator’s front following the firing of de facto coordinator Blake Williams at the conclusion of the regular season. Fisher isn’t expected to bring back Blake’s father – Gregg Williams – as defensive coordinator.

The NFL has yet to rule on whether Gregg Williams will be reinstated after a one-year suspension for his role in the New Orleans “Bountygate” scandal although that could happen following the Super Bowl. With the possible exception of former Arizona defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast, Fisher is not known to have interviewed any other coordinator candidates.

At the end of the day, Fisher could simply promote from within here, and such a move makes sense. Rams assistant head coach Dave McGinnis and secondary coach Chuck Cecil both have extensive knowledge of this system and both have been coordinators in the past.

It’s believed that the Rams have had at least some internal discussion about reaching out to recently fired Dallas defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. It’s debatable that Ryan would be a fit since most of his experience, at least recently, has been running a 3-4 scheme. (The Rams run a 4-3.)

Highly regarded Arizona defensive coordinator Ray Horton drew good reviews last year when interviewed by the Rams for the head coach opening that went to Fisher. But Horton still has a year left on his contract, and the Cardinals aren’t expected to grant permission for a defensive coordinator interview in St. Louis because it would be a lateral move. Horton also is still in the mix for the Cardinals’ head-coaching vacancy.
