PD: Wells needs foot surgery; Saffold has 'signifcant' neck strain
Wells needs foot surgery; Saffold has 'signifcant' neck strain
40 minutes ago • BY JIM THOMAS
The Rams dodged a bullet with offensive tackle Rodger Saffold but took a hit with center Scott Wells.
Coach Jeff Fisher said Monday that Saffold has a "significant" strained neck but nothing more serious than that after going down in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 27-23 loss to Detroit while pass-blocking.
Saffold returned to St. Louis on Monday after further testing and a hospital stay in Detroit on Sunday.
Saffold almost certainly will miss Sunday's game with Washington and perhaps longer.
But Wells, who didn't play in the second half against Detroit because of a foot injury, has a fractured metatarsal in his left foot and will need surgery to repair it.
The Rams will use the NFL's new injured reserve exemption rule. That designation means Wells can return to practice as early as Week 6 and can play in games as early as Week 8. But for now, they get a roster space cleared up for him as if he was on IR for the entire year.

Our offensive line is seriously cursed. Year in and year out all of these guys are getting banged up. I guess we are kind of used to being without Wells, so hopefully Robert Turner (who did an admirable job) can step in and continue to play good. Im worried about LT though. Hopefully Saffold misses no time at all. At max just this next game. We cant afford to have Wayne Hunter at LT.

Our scoring drive was without Wells and Saffold.

We will be fine. I predicted 4-12 and after yesterday, I would be happy to be proven wrong and most liley will. We are woefully thin at most positions due to the inept front office past 5 years but fish will squeeze all he can out of this group.....

Well time to go to next in line approach as trevor mentioned our scoring drive was without both...Wayne Hunter started many games (although inconsistent) he has experience and he is a big tackle needs to step up
Rok Watkins will have growing pains but he is going to get playing time and he needs to take advantage
This is not the Spags linehan woe is me Rams...Fisher will get us through adversity

Glad to hear Saffold is going to be okay. When the first positive report you get is that at least he can feel his toes, that's a pretty scary prognosis. The possibility that he might only miss one game is certainly better than what it looked like when he got carted off.

Actually, the touchdown play was the one that Saffold was injured on.

Well, this is maybe good, maybe bad. Saffold is a bit lighter than Hunter(I believe), so maybe our run game will improve a little. At the same time, Saffold has been better at pass protection than run blocking, whereas Hunter played more right tackle.
What scares me about the game coming up is that they have Kerrigan and Orakpo coming from the outside of their 3-4. I hope that in scouting the Redskins' game against the Saints, Fisher and Shotty look at how the Shanahans made RG3 successful. 3 step drops, no bombs, and designed runs(in our case, rollouts for Kendricks/Amendola).
Don't give the line time to give up sacks. RG3 averaged like 2.9 seconds from snap to throw. If Sam can replicate that, I have a lot more faith in our receivers against their corners than I do their receivers(Hankerson, old guy Moss, hurt Garcon(if he plays)) against Jenkins, Fletch and Finnegan in the first 4 seconds.I believe!
