Monday Morning QB 5/11/09
30. St. Louis
There's no doubt the Rams did the right thing, bypassing Mark Sanchez for Jason Smith. It might get GM Billy Devaney fired at the end of this year (a new ownership group might do that anyway), but this team simply had to start building the right way, and a franchise left tackle was vital to the future. Not that Smith can help much this year. It'll be a big improvement if Marc Bulger is still standing by December.
Monday Morning QB 4/28/09
Put simply, I really like what the Rams did, particularly in selecting Baylor tackle Jason Smith in the first round. And I applaud Billy Devaney, the St. Louis GM who is in an interesting and uncomfortable position there. The team might be sold, he's leasing a home, and his future is anything but secure.
Peter King always throws comments about the rams possibly getting sold almost everytime he writes about them.
Would he report something if he knew? Or just rumors?

Re: Peter King
This is what sportswriters do. They take a rumor, or a logical (though unconfirmed) suspicion, and report it as if they know something. Then, if the thing they report comes to pass, they say "you heard it here first!"
Welcome to the St. Louis Rams!

Re: Peter King
It all boils down to whether Chip is still shopping the team or if he decides to hold onto the team and keep it in the family. This is all speculation, since he has a successful career elsewhere and never intended to be a team owner.

Re: Peter King
At this point, this guy's just trying to start something, that probably doesn't exist. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the Rams supposed to be in the STL for the next few years?? And let's just "assume" that the Rams DID IN FACT move, after their time in STL, what owner or group of owners would want to move them to a Small Market?? Someone please elaborate.

Re: Peter King
I know you guys are all in denial that the Rams are for sale, but we have to accept the fact that Peter King may actually know more about the NFL than we do since he actually gets to meet and talk with league and team officials.
Let me just add, I hate Peter King. All I'm saying is that he knows more than we do

Re: Peter King
What is the definition of "for sale"?
If its, "if someone makes an offer, then we're listening," then, yes, the Rams are almost certainly "for sale."
If its, "let's make some calls and see if someone wants to take this team off our hands," then, I don't know and, in all likelihood, neither does Peter King.
Welcome to the St. Louis Rams!

Re: Peter King
Agreed. Every team is probably for sale in the league for the right price. And if I were a young head coach in the NFL I would probaly only lease a house anyway and invest my dollars elsewhere since permanent residence in a town is unlikley for any coach.
But by simple observation, the team is in contract with the Dome, Chip has hired a new GM and Coach and they are trying to make the Rams a winning team again by all counts. I say let's the forget the "for sale" issue and get ready to kick some Fortyniner Arse!!!!

That is my definition, yes

True enough. That's kind of the point I am trying to make.

Re: Peter King
What does that mean? I don't recall seeing a photo of a sign in front of Rams Park that reads "for sale." Just because sportswriters pubish their assumption that the Rams are actively trying to sell the team does not mean it is "well documented." In fact, it means nothing.

Re: Peter King
Any Estate Planners/Tax Experts out there?
How long does Chip have to come up with his inheritance tax. Does the IRS use "Fair Market Value", or does the tax becomes due only when he sells it?
Otherwise, why would he sell?

Re: Peter King
Since the team makes up a significant portion of Frontiere's estate, there are stall tactics that can be (and I'm sure they are) used to defer the collection of the tax due. However, the amount is already established. The tax is based (upwards of 40%) on the fair market value of the asset (ie. the franchise) on the date of death.
