Pick Six: Your Opening Day WRs!

Here's one of the most interesting questions concerning the Rams' roster makeup for 2011.

With 12 WRs currently in camp, who makes the final roster? For argument's sake, we can assume that three of these are camp bodies, leaving three to miss the cut.

    Danny Amendola
    Donnie Avery
    Mike Sims-Walker
    Greg Salas
    Austin Pettis
    Brandon Gibson
    Mark Clayton
    Mardy Gilyard
    Danario Alexander

NB: I've included Clayton on this list because I know a lot of fans are chomping at the bit for him to return.

    Who makes the cut?

Swap Amendola and DX. Danny has better hands.

Re: Pick Six: Your Opening Day WRs!

    1. Mike Sims Walker
    2. Danario Alexander
    3. Danny Amendola
    4. Austin Pettis
    5. Mardy Gilyard
    6. Greg Salas

As for my other thoughts. I think Sims Walker is #1 because he has the most potential. He's big, fast, good in the red zone and just coming in to his prime. I think he'll at least start as our #1. Amendola is perfect in the slot and I think either Gibson, Avery or Alexander will be our #2. whoever isn't will be cut imo. None of three are slot receivers, Alexander needs to stay healthy and Gibson and Avery have limited potential imo(yes Averys fast but he's not a good route runner and the staff already doesn't love him)

I think Pettis is our #4 and will get plenty of red zone snaps because of his brilliant hands and size. Salas and Gilyard are #5 and #6 but they may be inactive and maybe Curry takes a spot as a red zone target. I think Salas will be a great receiver in the future(great hands, good yac potential and great route runner) and I don't want to give up on gilyard as he has so much potential(and has looked drastically improved this year).

Clayton I don't care much about because he's still injured. Still if our receivers struggle I wouldn't mind signing him after he's healed.

Re: Pick Six: Your Opening Day WRs!

    My picks are:
    Sims-Walker
    Amendola
    Salas
    Pettis
    Alexander
    Gibson

I think this year we are going with consistancy over play making ability. Outside of Alexander, these have been our most consistant WRs. Sims-Walker is young, and has built himself quite a decent resume in Jacksonville. Amendola was the only WR we could always count on being there last year. The two rookies have rediculous hands and should be able to learn the offense at a good pace, unlike Gilyard last year, who just couldnt learn the playbook well enough. Gibson is a good route runner, he did have some drop issues last year, but at least he was healthy unlike others. and Alexander is just a freak, and i think everyone realizes that, If he can stay healthy he could be a monster, and thats why i think we hang on to him.

On to why i think we cut the remainders. Donnie Avery just never quite had the impact that we thought he could have. He tore up his knee, and who knows if he will have his speed completely back, and his speed is what gave him his value. That said, i dont think he has proven he is consistant enough on the feild, when he has actually been healthy. Mark Clayton, we pretty much decided we werent going to be having him back when we signed Sims-Walker, also, knee troubles and age. Mardy Gilyard, hes so young, hopefully we can find a way to keep him around on the practice squad, i still have faith in him, but he has to show something worth keeping around.

Re: Pick Six: Your Opening Day WRs!

im not nsure why in genealr people think DX is a gimme...he seems kinda slow to me, its hard to trust his knee, and dont forget the rams didnt aste a pick on him...i find it hard to believe the rams giving up on a few of these guys when they used recent high draft picks...i might be the minority when I say Avery is a lock..2nd rd pick and coming off injury, was pretty good when he did play, fastest guy..DX had what 1 , maybe 2 decent games..bulk of yards came off one play..I thought Gibson and Gilyard were in deep trouble, but it sounds like they are coming out in camp guns blazing..no way MSW comes here to get cut..Dannys a lock..and the 2 rookies are a liock..maybe the worse of those 2 goes on practice squad..but mine looks like this
    starters in all caps...
    MSW
    AVERY
    AMENDOLA
    Pettis
    Salas
Gibson/Gilyard/DX for battle of last spot, unless Salas or pettis go to practice squad..

You have to figure the new additions (MSW, Pettis and Salas) are pretty close to locks. Amendola is all but certain as well. If I'm naming true top 6, Mark Clayton makes that list while Avery and Alexander fight over the right to be the team's speedster. I think Clayton would be top 3 on the current roster...except that he isn't on the current roster. Until he signs, he's the most likely not to come back.

Re: Pick Six: Your Opening Day WRs!

Lets be realistic here. We don't have depth, we simply have unknowns. It could turn out to be a great crew or it could turn out to be a terrible crew. Amendola is the only proven and reliable target, the rest are totally shrouded in 'what-ifs'. It should say something about our depth that another team's cast-off (a team with WR depth problems of its own) is a starting #1 according to many here.

Im not looking to rain on anyone's parade, but we need to have our expectations grounded in some sort of reality. If MSW turns out to be a great addition, thats great, but lets not assume too much. My greatest hope is that DX stays healthy and one of the rookies has a stellar performance.

Re: Pick Six: Your Opening Day WRs!

While I voted for Avery to make the team, I wouldn't be shocked if we traded/cut him by the end of camp. I've always liked him, and believes he has much better hands than given credit for, but it doesn't seem like small speedsters like Eddie Royal and Bethel Johnson produced much in McDaniel's system.

Good to see Danny Boy is in the lead, I guess it is just a noisy minority that still doubt him because he is "short" and "can't stretch the field", no matter his production on the field.

Gibson may be a surprise, but I just don't like him Seems like he could be a Brandon Lloyd prototype. Boy I love having the knowledge that McD took an underachiever like Lloyd and turned him into a weapon DC's feared.
