Pittman glad to get extra work

    By Bill Coats
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    Friday, Aug. 22 2008
With Steven Jackson AWOL and Brian Leonard sidelined since Saturday because of
a sore shoulder, Antonio Pittman reigned as the Rams' unquestioned No. 1
    running back.

    For all of four days.

Jackson ended his 27-day holdout, signed a new contract and was back on the
field Thursday at Rams Park. Jackson won't play in Saturday's preseason game
vs. Baltimore, so Pittman still is practicing with the first team. But that job
    ultimately will be Jackson's.

"It's good that he's back," Pittman said. "Now that he's here, we can get the
ball rolling and add some more fire to the offense."

Pittman was the team's top rusher in the first two preseason games, picking up
88 yards on 15 carries a 5.9-yard average. Leonard, who probably won't suit
up Saturday, had 59 yards on 16 tries, and Travis Minor 50 yards on 13 attempts.

All benefited from the extra work, Pittman noted.

"Every one of the running backs gave the coaches a better look at what we all
can do," he said. "The opportunity was good for us."

    INJURIES UPDATE

Wide receiver Torry Holt, who missed last week's game because of back
stiffness, is expected to play against the Ravens. "He's much improved,"
    Linehan said.

Linehan also indicated that tight end Anthony Becht, who returned to practice
this week after suffering a hamstring injury early in camp, might see action.

Tackle Orlando Pace (shoulder) practiced for the first time this week but
    remains questionable for Saturday's game.

Still out Thursday were Leonard, safety Oshiomogho Atogwe (hamstring),
cornerback Fakhir Brown (shoulder), safety Jerome Carter (groin) and linebacker
    David Vobora (ankle).

    RAM-BLINGS

To create a roster spot for Jackson, the Rams designated guard Mark Setterstrom
as waived/injured. If he clears waivers, Setterstrom, out for the season after
knee surgery, will be placed on injured reserve. Former Mizzou defensive
lineman Lorenzo Williams is trying to earn a job with the Ravens.

I'm telling you, Antonio Pittman looked awesome behind our first string offensive line. Now imagine Steven Jackson running behind them. Could be a recipe for success.

Pittman was definitely a good free "draft pick" last year when we got him from the Saints. With another year under his belt I think he's definitely primed for being a good backup, and you can see that with his performance so far this year. A lot of that work was actually against starting defenses.

Okay, so Pittman showed he could do a decent job at the runningback position. I wonder how he'd do at left tackle?

Well, he'd probably take fewer penalties than Barron and be healthier than Pace, so...

Never understood why the Saints drafted him, of all teams, but certainly glad he made his way to St. Louis

Antonio Pitman is what we need in case Jackson goes down. I can see him adding depth and strength to our running game. Hopefully this 2 punch tandem carries us deep into the playoffs. Holt and Avery, McMichael at TE. We can be dangerous hope our line holds up!
