Pittman likes group in Rams backfield
    By Bill Coats
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    Thursday, Nov. 22 2007

Among other things, rookie running back Antonio Pittman will give thanks today
for the opportunity that he received with the Rams that wasn’t offered in New
    Orleans.

Pittman, a fourth-round draft pick, was released at the end of preseason by the
Saints, who were set at running back with Reggie Bush and Deuce McAllister. “It
was a sticky situation from the start,” Pittman said. “You’ve got two guys that
are making over $120 million between them.”

The Rams signed Pittman, a three-year starter at Ohio State, the day after he
was cut. He inched up the depth chart and now is the primary backup for Steven
    Jackson.

“It’s a good rotation we’ve got going with me, Brian (Leonard) and ‘Jack,’”
Pittman said. “Now, I’ve got to continue to keep working and solidify myself on
this team, just prove myself every week.”

Going from a star in college to a guy scrambling for a job in the NFL was
humbling, Pittman conceded. “But that’s just a part of growing up,” he said.
“As a man, there’s always going to be adversity in your life, and it’s about
    how you overcome it.

“Some people just walk away and quit. But I wasn’t ever allowed to quit
anything in my life; that’s how I was raised. Always keep fighting, and it’ll
    pay off.”

Is BL going to get one or two touches? If so that is a waste of a second round pick.

Not necessarily as Brian is more of a hybrid and can stay on the field as a lead blocking FB, receiver out of the backfield, blitz protector and more. I don't want to get into an argument over whether we should have taken a defensive player instead or whatever, the fact is we did select Brian and he'll likely develop into a very solid player. He'll be bigger and stronger next year with an off-season under his belt, and should win over most of his detractors in the next year or two. Brian doesn't have to have 10 touches a game to be valuable, if he picks up a blitzing LB or safety and allows Mark to complete a critical 3rd down pass thats just as valuable as catching it. If he gats 2 touches in a game at FB and is the first guy through the hole other teams will have to account for him. He is probably the fastest FB in the league and likely the most accomplished pure runner as a FB. If he can open a hole as a blocker for Jackson leading to a big gain -- that's value. He has great hands and can be an effective checkdown receiver when Marc's primary receivers are covered. ... So .. if Pittman is the #2 runnning back behind SJ, I don't see how that makes Leonard a wasted pick. Believe me -- if we can field a healthy O-Line next year (and we should be able to), Leonard will emerge -- he has too much talent, heart , and character not to ...

Pittman's emergence as the #2 running back is a very good thing as if Jackson can't go do to injury, then we will have another solid rb who can fill in thereby allowing Brian to contribute in his aforementioned roles.

I really like our backfield too. If Jax can stay healthy it is quite the formidable threesome.

And like AP, I too like the group in the Rams backfield! :bash:

    I like it a lot.

Right now, on paper, it looks great. I hope Pittman develops well and steady along with Leonard to boost the running game of Jax. To me, there is quite the potential with this combo.

That's the way it looks. BL is 3rd on the Depth chart now.

Not !! When will you guys understand ? ... Brian Leonard is #1 on the depth chart -- he plays fullback. Richard Owens is #2. The running backs are Jackson, Minor and Pittman with Pittman apparently moving ahead of Minor to the number 2 spot although he is still listed as the # 3 guy on the Rams official depth chart. Brian Leonard is not even listed as a running back on the Rams' official depth chart

    .
What position did Leonard play in Pre-season?

What position was Leonard playing when he had a hundred yard game?

I can tell you it wasn't fullback.

Fullbacks get around 1 carry per game.

He's just not going to get the touches from the Fullback position.

Who cares how many touches Leonard gets? We have Steven Jackson and Pittman running the ball both of which are better at rb than Leonard. Leonard just doesnt have that burst and quickness to be a NFL rb. Now if he bulks up he can make quite a good fullback with his catching skills.

All this is true, but still a 2nd round pick is a hefty price to pay for a hybrid fullback/occasional running back. You can get those types later in the draft and as FAs. We have so many other needs on this team and it is looking more like a luxury pick that the Rams could ill afford.

    WHAT SAY YE?

I care that's a second round pick that we could have used on anything else. Leonard was intended to be the backup to Jackson but the signing/play if Pittman scratched that. There were a thousand linemen we could have had that could have proved very usefull about now. I don't like being in the habit of wasting picks early on project players. Jack of all trades, master of none.....

I think BL has looked great at RB and at FB. I'm not sure how he has fallen behind Pittman. BL has a hugh upside, but he won't get there without touches. It's only a wasted pick if the Rams don't use this jack of all trades IMO.

I've also been thinking it was a wasted 2nd round pick ever since Leonard started taking snaps at FB. Paying a 2nd for a fullback who will be primarily blocking is a waste in my opinion. We needed a pass-rusher in the 2nd and there were plenty available - we have 17 sacks in 10 games, our pass-rush has been non-existant when we're not blitzing. They got the right guy in the 1st but they really dropped the ball in the 2nd round and wasted a valuable pick, that's my opinion of the draft so far.

The don't think of him as a fullback. I prefer to call him an "Quasi-Back" meaning that he can play multiple positions (There's a reson why se started at HB and currently plays fullback) and be effective from either one. He's a hard downhill runner to provide a great change of pace, and his recieveing skills are on par, (perhaps better from what we saw in college) than those of S-Jax. He also functions as a lead blocker.

Ladies and gentlemen, the definition of "Versatility." Don't think of him as your regular "one carry fullback" think of him as a 20 snap guy who is versatile enough to run, block and catch, and do all three well.
