Preview: Rams at Miami

Tuesday, Oct. 19 2004

Noon Sunday, Pro Player Stadium

The series

Miami leads the overall series 7-2, and is 2-1 against the Rams since the move
to St. Louis.

On Christmas Eve, 1995, the Rams closed their first season in St. Louis with a
41-22 home loss to the Dolphins despite 15 catches for 210 yards by Isaac
Bruce. It was Don Shula's last regular-season game as a head coach.

On Oct. 18, 1998, the Rams suffered what still is only their second shutout as
the "St. Louis" Rams, 14-0. QB Tony Banks was so disconsolate over his
performance that he skipped the team flight home from Miami and was not at work
the next day in St. Louis.

On Sept. 30, 2001, the Rams got 328 yards passing and four TD passes from Kurt
Warner, plus three TDs from Marshall Faulk, in a 42-10 romp at home.

The stats

Monday night's 28-21 victory over Tampa Bay was the Rams' eighth straight
prime-time triumph, a franchise record.

* * *

Miami is the third consecutive Rams opponent ranked in the top 10 in total
defense. Seattle was ranked first at the time it played St. Louis; Tampa Bay
was fourth; and the Dolphins are third.

Connections

Bruce is from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he helped Dillard High win the Class
5A state football championship in 1989.

* * *

Miami's roster includes five former Rams: RB Lamar Gordon, DT Bryan Robinson,
OT John St. Clair, DE Jay Williams and DT Jeff Zgonina. Gordon is on the
Dolphins' injured reserve list because of a dislocated left shoulder.

News of the day

The Rams made two roster moves Tuesday, releasing LB Tony Newson from the
active roster and releasing OT Matt Morgan from their practice squad.

Quotebook: Sept. 30, 2001

"Watching tape didn't help at all. You think run, it's a pass.
You think pass, it's a run."
- Miami LB Zach Thomas, after a 42-10 defeat to the
Rams.

- Jim Thomas

Re: Preview: Rams at Miami

I was at the 14-0 loss. Ugh! Hopefully, this one will be more memorable.
