Pro Football Writers Name Quinn DPOY

Quinn deserving of first DPOY honor

    January, 15, 2014
    By Nick Wagoner | ESPN.com

ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis Rams defensive end Robert Quinn has had no shortage of honors tossed his way for his 2013 season, but he added the biggest yet Wednesday when the Pro Football Writers of American named him this season's Defensive Player of the Year.

Quinn led the NFC in sacks with 19 and the NFL in sack yards with 145. He also had seven forced fumbles to lead the NFC. In the Rams' coaches review of the tape, Quinn also racked up 57 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 36 quarterback pressures and 33 quarterback hits.

In what likely was a close race, I'm a little surprised to see Quinn rewarded. That is not to say he doesn't deserve it -- for the record, I voted for Quinn for this award -- just that I wondered if his fine season was enough to earn him recognition over guys with more profile playing on playoff teams.

Alas, it appears that even though the Rams didn't have much in the way of national recognition, Quinn's week to week dominance was enough to draw attention from writers around the league.

The Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year award will be announced on Feb. 1. That is the award most commonly thought of as the "official" defensive player of the year award. It remains to be seen whether Quinn will take home that prize, but Wednesday's news would indicate that writers around the country have recognized his work.

Either way, there's no doubting that Quinn earned everything that comes his way this offseason.

It'll be a crime if he doesn't get the "official" AP DPOY award.

Well deserved! My only disappointment for Quinn is that he fell short by 1/2 sack to being the initial recipient of the Deacon Jones Award.

    Go Rams!

Don't be surprised if the AP writers go for the "feel good" story in Mathis and give it to him. Not that he isn't a worthy recipient himself, he is, but Quinn obviously is as well.

Congrats to Quinn though, he had an amazing year, here's to hoping next year is even better!

Agreed. In sacks, forced fumbles, and tackles, they're basically tied, but I'd put Quinn on top with his 2 fumble recoveries and TD. Of course I'm biased.

A great honor- and only the first of what we hope to be multiple great seasons from him.
