    Rams’ search for coach intensifies
Posted: January 6th, 2009 | Adam Schefter | Tags: NFL coaching search, St. Louis Rams

St. Louis’ coaching search is going into overdrive.

While the Rams plan to interview Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier and former Giants head coach Jim Fassel this week, they also have requested and received permission to interview Buccaneers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, who spent Monday in Denver interviewing for the Broncos vacant head coaching job. The Rams have yet to schedule the interview with Morris, but will attempt to shortly. But the Rams are staying busy.

    .
He JUST got the job of Coordinator in Tampa - he was the secondary coach.

In regard to Frazier, just one year ago his team was Dead last in Pass Defense in the NFL - 32nd.

Part of the reason the vikings were last in pass defense was that they were at or near the top in run defense. I bet they looked a lot better this year with jared allen in the lineup.

I think Frazier would be fine, provided, and ONLY PROVIDED, that we get better players. LOTS of MUCH better players.

Well, the proponents for Frazier say that he could be the next Tony Dungy, who was also the DC of the Vikings. He's a good coordinator, but more than that, he can command attention and respect, but he has a soft spoken nature like Dungy.

As for his defenses, yes, last year the Vikings were #1 against the run, and #32 against the pass. They were bad. They couldn't rush the passer and had no secodary to speak of. This year, with the additions of Jared Allen and Madieu Williams, they improved their pass defense to #18. Again, they were #1 against the run.

oh well..screw Raheem Morris is it? lets talk Frazier!

ok then...I have often thought about Leslie Frazier and the fact that in that famous Bears dismantlement of New England in the 85/86 SB when everyone was celebrating ..he got injured in the game and never played again.
thats gotta be hard on a guy...

anyway, back to the present..i know he had a 32nd ranked D against the pass and a 1st against the run..but well..arent our main problems stopping the run?
and lets not overlook the fact that he turned around that D..with the help of Jared Allen for sure..but still he did turn it around..lesser coaches have failed with more talent than the Vikes have.

he`s not in my top 5 but he`s on the bubble of my top 5 for sure!

The Combination of Frazier's 32nd in Passing and no 1 in Rushing brought them to 20th in total Defense that year ('07) - 20th . The Rams were 21st.

We can get back to Raheem Morris now - the recently promoted Raheem Morris. Sorry for any departure.

And then the Vikings improved to become the 6th ranked defense in Frazier's second year as coordinator after adding a good pass rusher into the equation.

As for Morris...well, at this rate maybe we should only bother listing the defensive coaches around the league that we are not interviewing. Think we'll bring in Marmie?

The rams had the worst special teams in the nfl. They fired coach bobby april. The next year april coached the bills, whose special teams led the nfl while the rams were still dead last. Does that mean that the rams could solve their problems by rehiring april, who was clearly a terrific special teams coach?

Of course not and why? Because our players on special teams werent any good.

Coaching matters at the margain. At the end of the day, talent is the key and the rams are lacking badly in talent and if we dont improve a TON in talent it isnt going to matter if we resurrect vince lombardi.

The Vikings signed some Big time talent - and the number One Defensive Free Agent in the NFL - which goes to General Counsel's point.

Frazier's never won a Playoff game - not even a Wildcard game -as a DEF COORD. I think in ANY head-to-head comparison with Rex Ryan he loses. Wins and Production is what matters, IMO.

Over Ryan's first two seasons as defensive coordinator of the Ravens (2005-2006), they won 19 games, made the playoffs in his second season, and lost the only playoff game they appeared in.

Over Frazier's first two seasons as defensive coordinator of the Vikings (2007-2008), they won 18 games, made the playoffs in his second season, and lost the only playoff game they appeared in.

Raheem Morris' first two seasons as defensive coordinator have yet to occur.

Ryan's defenses probably had better stats, but he took over a defense he already knew well. Frazier took over a Minnesota defense he had not coached before. Morris doesn't have the proven record of either.

To sum up, I don't think there's an obvious advantage between Ryan and Frazier, but I'd say both are better candidates than Morris. Keep in mind that Ryan has been passed up for multiple head coaching positions in the past, and I'm sure there are reasons. Stats really don't say it all when it comes to making the transition to head coach.
