Rams 2011 Cap Space.
I know we have around 10 mil in cap space.
Who do you guys think we will cut to clear up some room and how much will it give us?
Some fans around here are all excited about this years top tier free agents and are neglecting that we dont have all that much money to work with as of now.
P.S. The thread title should say 2012*. Guess I forgot what year were in

Re: Rams 2011 Cap Space.
Josh Brown and Donnie Jones are two guys who could easily go. Bartell's bonus (6 million i think) will depend on health. Jason Brown could easily be a goner. The biggest money could relate to jason smith (which depends in part on whether we draft a tackle and whether we want to move him inside to guard, at the minimum, he must take a paycut to stay).

Re: Rams 2011 Cap Space.
I'd like to see salary cap numbers for a lot of our overpaid vets. Jason Smith is first one gone the second it makes sense to cut him financially unless he restructures his contract to be paid like the backup RT he's shown himself to be. Jacob Bell, Jason Brown, Fred Robbins, and James Hall are probably near the top too (not sure of their contract situations), as is pretty much any FA we brought in last year with the exception of Mikell and Dahl. 3 consecutive years of drafting top 2 has just killed our salary cap space for 2012.

Re: Rams 2011 Cap Space.
Jacob Bell deal and future cap cost.
n order to make room for big ticket free agent additions Harvey Dahl and Quintin Mikell, the Rams had to clear space under the salary cap. Their options were limited as Chris Long, Jason Smith and Sam Bradford represented a rather significant portion of the Rams' cap space with their rookie contracts. Devaney and COO Kevin Demoff turned to Jacob Bell, asking him to restructure his deal. He agreed, and in return for cutting his $6 million salary by half, he'll be rewarded with unrestricted free agency next year.
On the one hand, it provides that classic free agent year motivation that players can use to cash in on the open market the following year. In the perfect world players play their best every season, but we know that they often chip in a little something extra in those situations.
On the other hand, it means the Rams will have to think about finding another guard for the left guard spot next year. They could always try to work something out with Bell, which would return some familiarity to the line. At 31 next year, Bell has enough playing time left to get one more rich free agent deal, so the Rams would have to pony up in order to keep him.
It also might make guard a priority in the 2012 NFL Draft.
Of course, around $2.3 million of his pay check will count against the Rams' 2012 salary cap, so even if Bell isn't here, he'll be with us in financial spirit.

Here's Jason's Smith cap number for 2012 if anyone is interested. From Pro Football Weekly:
I strongly doubt he'll be brought back with that cap number. He'll either be cut or asked to restructure.Rams RT Jason Smith is scheduled to count $13.3 million against the salary cap in 2012.

Re: Rams 2011 Cap Space.
Hence the reason that atriocious system had to be changed. Giants busts taking up so much cap space the team can't do anything with them, and continue to suck (in part) because of it. Such a bad idea to pay a rookie like they are already amongst the best players in the entire league.

Re: Rams 2011 Cap Space.
More proof on the great job devaney was doing. No talent on our team, yet no cap room.

Re: Rams 2011 Cap Space.
Does the 10 mil in cap space take into consideration having the #2 pick again? If not the Rams would pretty much be forced to trade down just to save money, wouldn't they?
