Rams 2011 Rookie Class: Final Report Card

Here are my final grades for the 2011 rookie class:

    Round 1: Robert Quinn
    Expectations:
Given Quinn's year off and the presence of a solid DE (James Hall) ahead of him in the depth chart, I viewed this a developmental year for Quinn. I expected him to show some prowess as a situational pass rusher, while developing his all-around skills.
Evaluation: Quinn generally met my expectations, registering 5 sacks and also adding 2 blocked punts. I would have liked to have seen more late-season production, but overall I think Quinn showed he has a bright future with the Rams.
    Final Grade: B

    Round 2: Lance Kendricks
    Expectations:
I expected Kendricks to platoon with Michael Hoomanwanui and help improve the Rams' Red Zone effectiveness.
Evaluation: Kendricks showed great promise in preseason, only to falter with dropped passes in the early regular season. While he settled down a bit, his production (28 receptions, 352 yards, 0 TDs) was disappointing. Nonetheless, I think Kendricks is part of th Rams' future and has some upside.
    Final Grade: C-

    Round 3: Austin Pettis
    Expectations:
I expected Pettis to compete for a role in the Rams' passing game, and to show sure hands on third down.
Evaluation: Pettis had plenty of opportunities and failed to distinguish himself. Then, to make matters worse, he ended the year with a four game suspension after a failed drug test (performance enhancers). He's a big longshot to return in 2012.
    Final Grade: F

    Round 4: Greg Salas
    Expectations:
I expected Salas to also compete for a slot receiver role, and to show good hands and route running.
Evaluation: Salas was making significant progress before a broken leg ended his season. I think he has a place with the Rams in 2012, and could ultimately be an upgrade over Danny Amendola.
    Final Grade: B

    Round 5: Jermale Hines
    Expectations:
I expected Hines to make the team and compete for playing time in a relatively thin group of safeties.
Evaluation: Hines was cut early in the season by the Rams, picked up by Carolina, released, and then picked up by the Colts. The fact that he stuck in the league, at least for now, shows that the Rams were not the only team that saw potential in this guy.
    Final Grade: D-

    Round 6: no picks

Round 7: Mikail Baker, Jonathan Nelson, Jabara Williams
    Expectations:
The hope here was that at least one of the three picks would be able to provide some valuable depth - a need that was apparent with the rash of injuries.
Evaluation: None of the three contributed, and all three are gone.
    Final Grade: F

    Overall Grade: C-
This draft demonstrates the problem with the Devaney regime. You can forgive a draft that produces promising, rather than instant-impact, players such as Quinn and Kendricks, but the failure to build any young depth in later rounds (apart from Salas) is a recipe for disaster.

I'm most disappointed with Kendricks. Just another on the long list of TE's that we have drafted in the last 6 years!

I'm excited about Quinn for next season. He is a force in the making.

Schools still out for me as far as Salas is concerned.

Another knock on the Devaney regime is to keep old, terrible veterans instead of the young draft picks/young players with potential.

    James Butler over Hines?
Justin King over Baker and Nelson?
Leber, Diles and Poppinga over J. Williams (who looked promising)?
C.J Ah You over George Selvie?
    Steven Spach over Fendi Onubon?
    Mark LeVoir over Renardo Foster?

    Robert Quinn
Would have liked to see him play more, sitting him for the first game after drafting him with the first pick was lame... He's a keeper.

    Lance Kendricks
lance did disappoint but still think he's going to be a weapon.

    Austin Pettis
Started slow and was making plays late in the year before he made a bone head decision. I think he we be back next year has a lot to prove.

    Greg Salas
Being from my home town, I was hoping the best for him, watching him play in high school he always was better then most on the field, so when he had that Monday night game from hell I thought he would be set back for the year. He showed why he is where he is... the kid has game and showed he can play with the big boys. Keeper.

The rest was not good... overall I agree with the grade.

Never mind taking late round players that weren't impacting our biggest weaknesses....Oline and DT ---

I bet this year will will be taking a DT and a guard in the last 3 rounds....

One good thing I can say about Kendricks this year, is that he has at least flashed in games, this season.
Both in the run game and at pass receiving. His hands were supposed to be one of his strengths coming in from the draft. But for some reason he has really struggled catching the ball. ? He doesn't
get injured every five minutes either.
