Rams agree to terms with fifth-round pick Fry

With two weeks remaining before training camp, the Rams are halfway home in securing their draft picks. When the team agreed to terms with center Dustin Fry on a three-year contract Friday, it meant that four of eight draftees are in the fold.

Fry was a fifth-round choice (No. 139 overall) out of Clemson.

Signed previously were Tennessee cornerback Jonathan Wade, a third-round selection, plus seventh-rounders Keith Jackson, a defensive tackle from Arkansas, and Derek Stanley, a wide receiver from Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Still without deals are Nebraska defensive lineman Adam Carriker (first round), Rutgers running back Brian Leonard (second), Michigan State defensive tackle Clifton Ryan (fifth) and Georgia tackle Ken Shackleford (sixth).

The 6-foot-3, 314-pound Fry started for two seasons at Clemson and was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference pick as a senior while completing a degree in sports management. He was a state-champion wrestler at Summerville (S.C.) High.

Rams coach Scott Linehan described Fry as "physical and fairly nasty. . . . His claim to fame coming out of college was his knockdowns and pancake blocks. Youíve got to have a little nastiness in you to do that."

Veterans Andy McCollum and Brett Romberg are expected to compete for the starting job at center. Fry, who also will get a look at guard, could earn a job as backup or land on the practice spot.

"Iím going to come in and try to learn as much as I can," he said, "and if itís the cards for me to play this year, then Iíll be happy. And itís it not, then Iíll be happy to sit and run for a year."

Good to hear. Hopefully between Fry and Romberg, we've found a future center we can count on to take over for McCollum. I'm optimistic.

We have potentially 4 centers on the roster if you count Incognito. How many centers will we have on the roster come opening day?

Good to hear. I'm all for keeping Fry on a, hopefully, long term basis.

How about we just start three centers, Barron and Pace and you never know which one will be snapping!

    Ha.

Dumb football question-- there's no way you're allowed to do that, right??

Re: Rams agree to terms with fifth-round pick Fry

There's a few movie instances where they are tricky on who hikes the ball and eligibility, and I just looked pretty hard at the rulebook up on NFL.com. There's nothing but the 7 people on the line of scrimmage and the outside two are eligible receivers. I didn't find anything about who can hike the ball and who can't along the line, so I think it could be done if we overloaded one side by snapping from a guard position. No one does it is all.

Good, Fry needs to come in and work on his agility. He's a massive man, and should have very little problem in the straight on run blocking game. He looks like he is a little sloppy and needs to work on his agility and quickness. Once he has got that down, I see no reason as to why he can't start for us.
Center seems to be getting drafted later and later in the draft, so it wouldn't surprise me if he turned to be a gem.

Re: Rams agree to terms with fifth-round pick Fry

The fact that he's not up to the speed of the NFL yet and as you said, a little sloppy, is reason enough why he won't start this year, especially when we have Rhomberg and McCollum who are ready. I do agree that he could certainly be a gem, as when you're on the interior, if you just see red and maul the heck out of the tackle and linebacker in front of you, you're on your way to being good. If he's "nasty" as coach says, we might have found a good road grader who can plow the way for Jax and Leonard.

I'm sure his history as a wrestler will help him some. I'm probably being overly optimistic, but hopefully he can become a top center someday.

Re: Rams agree to terms with fifth-round pick Fry

With "nasty" Fry and "mean" Incognito all we need is to bring in Conrad Dobler to mentor the OL and then we'd have us something.

However we would get even more boged down with penalties and fines, but it would be interesting to watch when we were moving the ball forward.
