Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports it is looking more and more like former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jim Bates will not be the next defensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams, despite a contract offer in excess of $1 million a year from the team. After being unable to strike a deal despite what they feel is a lucrative offer, the Rams may back off trying to hire Bates.

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams wide receivers coach Henry Ellard has signed a new contract to remain with the team. He has been on the Rams' coaching staff for the past five seasons after an NFL playing career that spanned 16 seasons. Ellard had been drawing interest from New Orleans and Detroit but has decided to stay put.

dam, bates rejects an offer of over 1 mill. to be coordinator. someone needs to explain to him that this is not the redskins.
