Rams check out Bentley, ex-Pro Bowl lineman

    By Jim Thomas
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    08/25/2008

Former Pro Bowl offensive lineman LeCharles Bentley, who has not played the past two seasons because of knee problems, was headed to St. Louis for a visit with the Rams and a physical Monday.

Bentley, 28, earned two Pro Bowl berths for New Orleans, starting 57 games at guard and center for the Saints between 2002-05. But after signing a six-year, $36 million free agent contract with his hometown Cleveland Browns in 2006, Bentley has not played another NFL game.

Bentley tore the patellar tendon in his left knee at the start of training camp that year. Complications developed, including a staph infection, and three more operations were needed. Doctors at one point considered amputating the leg.

Cleared to practice with the Browns in June, Bentley asked for and was granted his release.

If healthy, Bentley could provide a boost for the Rams at center or guard. The Rams currently have Nick Leckey and Brett Romberg competing for the starting spot at center. Romberg has been sidelined for the past couple of weeks with a broken hand.

The guard position suffered a blow when Mark Setterstrom suffered a season-ending knee injury Aug. 16 against San Diego.

It is not clear if the Rams are just checking out Bentley, or are intent on signing him if he passes his physical.

Oh hells yes. If he can get healthy and shake off the rust(Not that much more than Pace, admittedly), he was in line to become on of the league's best centers when he left New Orleans.

I checked him out in madden 09 and I'm glad they're actually doing it now!

IF he's healthy, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

As you can see, that's a big "if."

Yes, of course Av, but at the very least isn't he worth a practice squad spot?

He's not eligible for a practice squad spot, since those spots are reserved for players with less than four years experience.

I also wouldn't use Madden as a deciding factor in what free agents you want to look at. It's noteworthy that he hasn't been signed yet by another team, but if he does check out healthy, he could provide some experienced depth.

Former Saint? Didn't we already have someone by the name of Turley? I dunno. Maybe we should really look at this guy to make sure. Still would be a great signing. Now can we fill in a defensive spot?

i would sign him instantly and give him a chance to compete for the center spot... he's better than anyone we have playing the center position right now even playiing 60% percent...

Jeez, they almost took the guys leg off .... lemme repeat that, OFF, a year ago and now we're bringing him in for a look? I mean, best of luck to the guy and all, but seriously, you guys think he can still play at that pro bowl level or maybe a little less? Honestly, I think we should wait until AT LEAST the FIRST round of roster cuts before signing anybody, right?

    But Nick's question remains.....

If Bentley is the old Pro Bowl Bentley, then why hasn't he signed a contract over the past 3 months?

Exactly! Any team can sign him and nobody has .. I would imagine there are alot of teams that would like to help themselves to a Pro Bowl O-lineman, a healthy Pro Bowl lineman that is ..

I agree and I would be surprised if he even passes the physical.

Ah, thanks for the note on the practice squad, I didn't know that.

And I know that Madden isn't a REAL deciding factor, nor should it be, but it is certainly a weak point on our team that could be filled by a dominant player if he can return to form.

As for him almost losing his leg, that was because of a staph infection if my mind serves me right, not due to an injury, so it should be fine now that the staph has been cleared out. The atrophy in the legs however could be an issue...

Perhaps sign him to an incentive contract...you play, we pay....
