Rams Close to a Deal With AJ Feely

Posted by Michael David Smith on March 5, 2010 10:49 AM ET
We still don't know who the St. Louis Rams' starting quarterback will be this season. But we may have learned today who their backup will be.

Our old friend Aaron Wilson tweeted, and Rams Billy Devaney "pretty much confirmed" in a radio interview, that the Rams are close to a deal with free agent quarterback A.J. Feeley.

Feeley was most recently under contract with the Panthers, but he never played in a game for Carolina. He last got on the field in the regular season in 2007, when he started two games for the Eagles. He's also played for the Dolphins.

The 32-year-old Feeley has been a backup to Donovan McNabb before, and it's possible that he could be be a backup to McNabb again in 2010. Or he could be a backup to Marc Bulger, Michael Vick, Sam Bradford or whoever else the Rams have under center.

Just popped up on PFT. I don't really view it as something to get excited about. Feely hasn't done much...ever really and will probably compete for a job as 2nd string with Null(if we sign/draft a starter). I could even see Null edging him out.

I'd say that Feely makes sense in terms of bringing in a veteran QB who is familiar with the system, has started in the NFL, and probably won't be too expensive.

If they do sign him I also think this is a pretty clear indication that (1) the Rams don't expect that Bulger will be back, and (2) they are going to take a QB early in the draft. Not that any of that is all that surprising.

Why bring in a Veteran Qb when we have Marc Bulger?

    Simple: money.

I'm sure that Feeley will sign for a lot less than Bulger's current salary. I also presume that Bulger would not take a pay cut to the amount Feeley will receive.

Totally agree AV. This is the sign that Bulger is on the way out. Here is the veteran QB that they wanted who can mold a rookie and who knows Shurmurs system.

AJ Feely? I thought he was garbage? He only brings leadership IMO. He would be a lot less expensive than Bulger though.

Most fans want rid of Bulger too, and this would allow them to get rid of him.

any chance of Feeley starting here or his he just a backup?

The trouble with this scenario is that the mentor back sucks. He's an upgrade over Boller, but I'd be hard pressed to argue that he's better than Tony Banks.

My childlike faith that this front office knows what it is doing and has a concrete plan is continuing to waver.

I see him replacing Boller, not necessarily Bulger.
