Rams in contention? Sounds crazy, but . . .

    By Bill Coats

An 0-6 start should bury a team in the standings and remove all motivation for the remainder of the season. Not so this year in the NFC West, where no one sports a .500-plus mark.

“I think we have to look at that and feel fortunate at this point,” coach Scott Linehan said. “We just have to take advantage of it.”

Crazy as it seems, a victory Sunday at Seattle would put the Rams into contention in the division. The Seahawks and Cardinals are 3-3, and the ***** are 2-3. Arizona and Frisco are underdogs Sunday vs. the Redksins and Giants, respectively.

So if the Rams, who gradually are getting their injured players back, can pull off an upset, they could be just two games out of first place with nine to go.

“We definitely have something to play for,” defensive end James Hall said. “We’ve got to just keep plugging away. One of these days, the ball’s going to bounce our way.”

Added wide receiver Torry Holt: “Being 0-6 and feeling like we’re still in pretty good position sounds funny, but that’s the situation right now.”

    ***

Linehan described Friday’s practice as “great, outstanding, very, very good.” A day earlier, he’d ended practice with a loud, obscenity-laced rant to the team, highly unusual behavior by the normally placid coach.

Linehan was angered when guard Claude Terrell “mouthed off” to him during practice, team sources said. Terrell was contrite Friday in apologizing to the coach and the team. Still, Terrell, who has rankled Linehan a couple of times previously, might be deemed expendable if Todd Steussie is re-signed after the bye (Nov. 4).

    Notes & quotes:

    >>Wide receiver/returner Dante Hall (ankle) was the only player not in uniform Friday. Asked when that last occurred, Linehan replied, “Preseason.”

    >>RB Steven Jackson (groin), who wore a red “no contact” jersey all week, won’t play Sunday.

    >>QB Marc Bulger, coming back after missing two games because of broke ribs, had a strong week of practice. “It’s the best he’s felt since before he got” hurt, Linehan said.

    >>The Rams have dropped four games in a row to the Seahawks since beating them three times in 2004.

    All for now . . .

Sounds funny to who? Pretty good position? NOT! Just not mathematically eliminated.
A win this Sunday is mandatory.

I Agree, while I love the optimism and wish this were true we are not going to have a shot at the division. We couldnt beat any of the 6 teams we have faced so far what makes this week different? I would love it if we won but its just not likely. If Jackson were playing this week I would give us a shot but Leonard doesnt scare anyone.

This entire year is crazy, from stars getting hurt, to stars not doing well(we all saw LJ, but LT until this week?), to Brady being Manning, to who knows what else can happen. Truth is, yes, we're only 3 games out and if everything goes right, we can be 2 games out after this week. If we can get that first win, who knows where we can go, but it has to come this week, in a divisional game. We already gave up two, we need to take the third. Will we go 10-0 over the stretch, no, but if we can sweep the rest of the west games, we actually do give ourselves a shot as long as the rest of the pieces fall into place.

The NFC West isn't a tragedy, it's a farce! Just imagine if somehow we were leading the division with 4 wins going into week 12. Nah, the optimism is cute, but this team is a long ways from being a contender right now even if we are only 3 games out from first place.

Optimism is great from the players, at least we know they're going out there Sunday and playing their hardest, but honestly if they win 6 in a row, highly improbable with the way they've been playing , even if they do, the Rams are still a .500 team. So how about they win ONE and then maybe I'll be more inclined to listen.
