Rams' cornerbacks ailing, safeties fine ..

BY JIM THOMAS | Posted: Thursday, October 7, 2010 3:05 pm

The St. Louis Rams are getting healthier at safety, but once again healthy bodies are in short supply at cornerback.

Nickel back Justin King, coming off a seven-tackle outing against Seattle, sat out Thursday's practice with a right calf injury -- an injury that had slowed him during training camp. With Kevin Dockery sidelined for perhaps two weeks with a reoccurence of a past hamstring injury, rookie Jerome Murphy could be the team's third cornerback Sunday against Detroit.

Meanwhile, all four safeties on the roster got a full workload Thursday. Undrafted rookie Darian Stewart, who was surprisingly effective as a blitzer and displayed solid tackling before suffering a hamstring injury late in the Washington game, was full participation.

Oshiomogho Atogwe, who was limited against Seattle with a thigh injury, was not even listed on Thursday's injury report.

Running back Steven Jackson, who had yet to even practice last week at this time, got a fair amount of work Thursday but was officially listed as limited participation.

Left tackle Rodger Saffold, who left practice early Wednesday after getting kicked in the left shin, returned to practice Thursday and took his regular turn. Defensive tackle Gary Gibson (shoulder), who missed practice Wednesday, took part in some team drills Thursday.

good news, any word on Hoowey? Really losing King for a game wouldn't be a huge blow because Murphy looks pretty talented. Having OJ back at full strength and Steven being healthier than last week is great news.

It's amazing how everyone is acknowledging how much talent the Rams have after two wins. A few weeks ago, Jeff Gordon says they are devoid of talent. Now, he says they've had talent all along, but they are finally executing. Whatever.

Personally, I find it hard to imagine that even the average football fan didn't recognize the talent of youngsters D.Scott, R. Saffold, J. Murphy, Illinois Mike, George Selvie, and especially Bradley Fletcher. I'm leaving off the guys that even my great grandmother knew had tons of talent, but apparently escaped the eyes of professional sports writers for virtually every outlet in America. Guys like OJ, Jackson, Bradford, James L, J. Brown, and Robbins.

Yeah, three weeks ago the Rams had no talent. Pretty funny.
