St.Louis Rams cut safety Corey Chavous
By Jim Thomas
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
The Rams began their roster-shaping and their salary cap drive Friday, releasing veteran strong safety Corey Chavous. Chavous, 33, came to St. Louis as a free agent with the arrival of coach Scott Linehan in 2006. He was a three-year starter, a defensive team captain last year, and one of the most respected players in the locker room.
But his lack of speed became more of a liability on defense during his tenure with the Rams, and he lost his starting job to Todd Johnson late in the 2008 season. It became apparent as the season wound down, even before Steve Spagnuolo was hired, that Chavous didn’t fit into the Rams plans for 2009 and beyond.
Earlier in the week, Chavous’ agent requested that the Rams release him as soon as possible, thus giving Chavous more time to look for another job before the start of the free agency and trading period. Releasing Chavous saves the Rams $1.2 million in cap space.Last edited by HUbison; -02-13-2009 at 05:33 PM.

Re: rams cut chavous
Um, just checking here, but wasn't Fakir on a 1 year contract? There wouldn't be any need to cut him..

I think you right. Brown was resigned to a one year contract. Thing is he got money for both contract.

Re: rams cut chavous
Finally, we get to bring in a new strong safety! I have been wanting to replace him for a couple years now. Now we don't have a choice.

Re: rams cut chavous
I think everyone saw this coming, no one could question his leadership and attitude but he's clearly lost a step. I'd be shocked if we didn't come out of free agency with a SS, I'm almost certain it will be James Butler.
Keep those cuts a comin'
Next up: Pisa, Holt & Green.
We gotta get younger, faster, bigger and stronger.
First post for me

Re: rams cut chavous
Chavous did nothing for the Rams, I'm glad to see him go.

Re: rams cut chavous
The leadership aspect will be missed, as I do believe he was one of the eldest rams on defense anyway, however it is true the guy didn't have it anymore. Happy trails to him.

Re: rams cut chavous
Although he was frustrating to watch sometimes, and I still give kudos to Chavous, he was one of the only Rams who would actually play with his heart, and he offered some good leadership, it was nice having him able to give advice to Atogwe.
Good Luck Corey Chavous and Good Luck!RamsFan16

Re: rams cut chavous
Chavous was always praised as a good locker room presence and leader; he didn't always make the tackle, but he always looked like he was trying out there. I think his presence on the team was beneficial to Atogwe, who really started to take off when he was paired with Corey IMO. It's a shame he had to be cut, but the NFL is a business and it creates much needed cap room.
Yep, James Butler is really the only name I can think of right now in terms of players likely to be on Spagnuolo's radar.
