Rams cut their punter, sign defensive end

    By Bill Coats

The Rams have cut Kevin Stemke, leaving rookie Reggie Hodges as the only punter on the roster.

Stemke, a left-footed kicker from the University of Wisconsin, was signed last Nov. 11 to replace veteran Sean Landeta. In six games, Stemke averaged 39.8 yards on 28 punts.

Hodges, a sixth-round draft pick, averaged 40.2 yards on 254 punts at Ball State.

Also, the Rams have picked up defensive end Brandon Green, a 6-foot-2, 264-pound Rice product who recently was
    released by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Green, 24, missed his entire rookie season in 2003 because of a knee injury.

He played in three games last season for the Jaguars, recording two tackles.

Seems A Little Early To Cut Stemke, since We Have No Ideal How This Other Kid Will Do.

They obviously saw something they liked in the rookie mini-camp.

what really sucks about this, is that the new kid isn't even under contract. This makes no sense to me!

I agree it appears perplexing on the surface, but before we rush to judgment, lets keep a couple of things in mind.

    1) We need to understand the cap/money implications. Players salaries become guaranteed as of a certain date. If stemke is on the roster june 1, that triggers i believe some form of cap implication for this year. If we really believe that the kid is the better punter, what is the point of waiting, especially if there is any guaranteed money or cap effect that kicks in?

    2) Stempke wasnt that great. Granted, he was better than the Ancient One was had the job before him, but if for some reason Gil Hodges doesnt work out for this year, we will sign another vet and probably be no worse off than having stempke, who may very well be available again anyway. Remember, there is no real offense or much timing to learn for the punter. Snap, catch, punt!

    3) Doing the right thing by stempke. Again, if we knew he wasnt going to be the guy, why not give him the best chance to catch on somewhere else.

ramming speed to all, and welcome to our new punter
