Re: Rams cut WR Donnie Avery and QB Thad Lewis
Avery requesting a release makes sense. He might not want to play fifth fiddle to players that were his backups just last year. The receiving corps gets worse with Avery not in the lineup because he is clearly talented.
Thad outplayed Feeley, but Bradford seems like he wants to lean on Feeley to tell him what he sees. The backup QB is also always in Bradford's ear. I hope Thad lands on the PS again because he has a lot of talent and moxie for a UDFA player. Hope he keeps working and becomes the direct backup next year.

So much for the "Thadford Offense"

Re: Rams cut WR Donnie Avery and QB Thad Lewis
I feel for Thad. What a waste if he rides the pine another year.
Will a desparate team "discover" TL? I hope it's not in our division.
Donnie who?Patient, not saintly.

Re: Rams cut WR Donnie Avery and QB Thad Lewis
I don't know the rules very well but a google search says...
eligible unless he has served more than two previous seasons on practice squad.
So I think he is eligible but maybe the new bargaining agreement changed it.
Either way I'm torn. I like TL but Bradford, in my opinion, will be the same caliber as Manning and Brady... and you just don't see them coming off the field for a "wildcat" formation. : )

Re: Rams cut WR Donnie Avery and QB Thad Lewis
Sigh...I guess I'll have to be the voice of reason for those of you who feel we should have kept D. Avery.
1. He runs horrible routes.
2. He struggles to get off the line of scrimmage & beat man coverage(even with 4.2 speed).
3. His hands are "questionable" at best.
4. He fragile.
5. Lacks ST ability.
*Alot of you guys are in love with his speed, but speed alone does not make a good WR in the NFL. He's not getting better, and didn't want to sit the bench in his 3rd year, so he had to go (its as simple as that). God bless him as he goes forward.
Now as far as T. Lewis is concerned, guys he looks good......but against 3rd STRING TALENT & UNDRAFTED ROOKIES!!!! He's done nothing to warrant him being #2.

Re: Rams cut WR Donnie Avery and QB Thad Lewis
This makes even more pissed that we drafted Pettis and Salas, no way either guy is better than Avery. I think he would have been great in this offense .

Re: Rams cut WR Donnie Avery and QB Thad Lewis
Avery was our most established WR coming into this season. He was also our highest paid. After MSW was signed, he was our #2 highest paid WR.
At the end of the preseason, he was at best, #4 on the depth chart, behind Amendola, Gibson, and MSW, and Salas is showing he can be that 4th guy who can beat 1:1 coverage enough to push the ball through to get a 1st down. You don't pay $1.1M to a guy who will hardly see the field and will only take valuable reps away from the youngins.
Avery getting cut was nothing about whether he's good or bad or fragile or anything like that. He was just too expensive for what his role was going to be. Simple as that, and it's great to say that Avery, who isn't a bad player by any means, was our 4th best guy on his best day. There are plenty of teams needing a receiver of his quality and he'll land on his feet.I believe!

Re: Rams cut WR Donnie Avery and QB Thad Lewis
Avery was a bad draft pick to begin with. No one new him out of college, we just had high hopes for a high draft pick.

Re: Rams cut WR Donnie Avery and QB Thad Lewis
His backups? He was on IR the entire year, no one was his backup, unless you mean guys who went on IR after him, and then its debatable whether he was even the #1 wr on the IR. As far as I can tell, he didn't lose to anyone who was his backup.
As far as Thad goes, I have no problem with it. You don't backup your 2nd year qb with a guy who hasn't even taken one NFL snap, that's just asking for trouble. Go with experience, let Thad get some work in on the ps. Backup qbs aren't the hardest to find, I'm not going to fret over Thad at all.

Re: Rams cut WR Donnie Avery and QB Thad Lewis
Avery being cut, quite surprising ... but ... now I begin to understand the rationale a little. As previous posters have said, speed was / is Donnie's strongest asset; perhaps needed to prove more, better catching and route skills?
Best wishes to Avery, he'll probably be picked up elsewhere soon.
Lewis being cut, not surprised at all.
Bradford / Feeley fine with me.
