Rams demand part of bonus back from Wroten

    By Jim Thomas
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    Tuesday, Aug. 19 2008
As a result of his one-year suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse
policy, defensive tackle Claude Wroten already is out $445,000. That figure
represents his scheduled base salary for 2008. Now, Wroten could be out even
    more money.

That's because the Rams have filed a grievance with the league for the
pro-rated portion of Wroten's signing bonus. Wroten, a defensive tackle from
Louisiana State, received a signing bonus of $805,000 from the Rams after being
selected in the third round (No. 68 overall) of the 2006 draft.

Wroten signed a four-year contract coming out of college, so the Rams are
asking for one-fourth of that bonus back or $201,250 representing the lost
    season of 2008.

Wroten will be represented by the NFL Players Association in the grievance. The
case gets assigned to an arbitrator, with the hearing usually taking place in
the team's city. The entire process normally takes about one year, but most
cases are settled before they reach the hearing stage.

Since Wroten already has been paid the bonus, he will have to pay back the
money out of pocket if he loses the grievance.

The decision by the Rams to seek part of the signing bonus is not unusual. In
fact, it's something of a cut-and-dried procedure in recent years because of
provisions in the collective bargaining agreement giving teams the right to get
back pro-rated portions of signing bonuses in the case of one-year suspensions.

Rams president of football operations Jay Zygmunt declined to comment on the
grievance; so did Wroten's agent, Joel Segal.

Wroten's suspension was announced by the NFL on reporting day for Rams training
    camp on July 24.

Remember a couple weeks ago when people said Jackson shouldn't hold out for more money because teams can't get money back from players who don't do well?

    Hmmm...

This isn't a didn't do well story. This is a broke an NFL rule and thus was suspended story.

I don't blame the RAMS one bit for going after the "PREPAID" bonus portion that is due them.

Just a guess, but i dont think this action by the rams demonstrates an indication that the team thinks wroten fits into their long term plans.

We should give that money to Jackson. Maybe he'll be happy.

I've been saying since they drafted this guy that he would be the next Jimmy Kennedy- fat, unproductive, and carrying the "potential" label. He's Jimmy Kennedy Jr.

    .
The Rams have drafted more Busts on the DL than any team in Modern history.

We used practically a top ten pick on Damione Lewis, we used approx the 12th pick on Jimmy Kennedy, a prime 3rd round pick on Anthony Hargrove, another on this POC, Wroten.

Wroten and his DL teammate on LSU are two reasons that I didn't think that LSU DT Glenn Dorsey would play like the number 1 pick in the draft in the NFL. LSU DL have chalked up some gaudy numbers on the DL and most times that has not translated to the NFL. While Dorsey will certainly be better than Wroten, I really doubt he'll be the monster in the NFL that many are predicting. A long NFL career is doubtful with his medical history too.

Just about every single defensive draft pick- high or otherwise- taken during the lovie smith error has been a bust. It didn't get much better under Marmie and is still up for grabs with Haslett.

My guess is most if not all of that money has been spent on good ole Mary Jane. So good luck to the Rams front office on that one.

Re: Rams demand part of bonus back from Wroten

I've always thought going after signing bonus was just a little bit strange. I mean they have stuff like roster bonuses that are contingent upon being on the team and able to play. A signing bonus is a bonus for signing with the team, right? The only way it really makes sense to try to take it back is if the contract states that the bonus is for agreeing to the terms of the contract (which you could then argue that he failed to do), rather than just a bonus for entering into the deal.
