RAMS discussions on satelite radio
Last night Tim Ryan and Pat Kerwin received a call from a packer fan asking about Jim Haslett. Ryan and Kerwin both feel like Haslett is better suited as a DC rather than a headcoach. The caller asked than why has Haslett failed in St. Louis as their DC? Ryan and Kerwin both laughed and said have you seen the RAMS roster? Ryan and Kerwin commend Haslett for the Katrina and RAMS situation that he has had to deal with but again calling Haslett an NFL lifer would much rather see him as a DC. Haslett will bring intensity, discipline and a load of blitz schemes that the Green Bay fans have never seen before.
They both feel pretty confident that Haslett will end up in Green Bay.
This morning Bob Papa, Randy Cross and Peter King brought up the headcoaching search that is going on in St Louis.
Peter King feels that the LIONS headcoaching job is more attractive than the RAMS job. He says the RAMS will be sold in 1 year. What new coach is going to sign on for 1 year...anticipating that the new ownership would clean house.
However of the names that have been mentioned for the RAMS job, King thinks that Frazier or Garrett will get the job.
Randy Cross disagrees and feels like keeping Haslett makes more sense with the sale of the team looming. Haslett filling in for 1 more year makes perfect sense.
Kings concern with the RAMS keeping Haslett is the reaction by the fan base.
Same old RAMS........The RAMS have to make a change......
King and Cross are giving Devaney alot of kudos for the time and effort he is putting in to get this right. Especially with the potential sale of the team as an obstacle.

Perhaps they feel he will be a cheaper option? Or will have an easy scapegoat when things go wrong again?

Re: RAMS discussions on satelite radio
I'm not so sure about that. Haz might be tempted to take a short term offer, better to be a HC than a coordinator. Why would he not wish to take the gamble? If the Rams were significantly better at the end of 2009, he'd probably get extended. The only drawback might be that it could prove to be difficult to attract other coaches/coordinators when on such a short leash. Haslett does want to coach the Rams, and he isn't getting any other head coaching offers ..

Re: RAMS discussions on satelite radio
Why is it better to be HC of a team in such bad shape that a one year resurrection is unlikely & may be sold, anyway, than DC for a contender? GB's defense is pretty good. They lost a number of key players last year & still were close to winning a lot of games. If they get healthy, all Haz has to do is get fitted for his foam cheesehead, look tough on the sideline, & he gets credit for 'turning around" the D. Then move on to a better HC option.
If I were him, I'd be buying thermal undies & have my wife working on her fondue and bratwurst recipes.
On the other hand, Haslett may be thinking that ,with all the high profile HC talent likely to be in the market next year, this is his last best chance to get the big dog job anywhere & the preceding mess @ the Rams is a built-in rationale to defend himself with if the results are less than stellar. Goodness knows he's perfected that line of argument in his current campaign. I'm not saying it's without merit but it is certainly a convenient form of "plausible deniability".

Re: RAMS discussions on satelite radio
I had heard that Haslett was open to a shorter deal (2 or 3 years), and we probably would not have to pay him as much as say Spagnuolo or Garrett because we're not luring him away from an already lucrative contract elsewhere. Linehan's salary paid about $2 million year. Spagnuolo makes slightly more than $2 million/year, and Garrett makes about $3 million/year.
