Rams expected to ask permission to interview Giants DC Spagnuolo

So, if youíre scoring at home, Spagnuolo will apparently interview this week with the Lions and Jets. The Browns were expected to ask the Giants for permission to talk to Spagnuolo, too (in fact, they may have already), and the Rams are expected to ask sometime tomorrow (if they havenít already).
From Ralph Vacchiano's NY Daily News blog.

I don't mind this. I believe he is the best candidate for our Rams.

    Defensive minded coach.
Led his team to a superbowl.
Put together one of the best defenses in the NFL.

    Where can you go wrong?

Did Tom Coughlin take a sabbatical in 2007 that I'm not aware of?

I'm not going to say it was Coughlin alone. haha.

But the Spag's defense did win them that game...

agreed....Tom Coughlin is the HC and deserves most of credit = but anybody with a pair of eyes can see what Spagnuolo did for that team.....His players "loved" him and they played very very hard for him.......Spags is a defensive genius no doubt...

Will he be a great head coach? who knows? But I would gamble that he would be....

Heh, I agree that it certainly wasn't Coughlin alone and that Spags has played a big part in the Giants' championship success. Though I was joking around, it did seem like Coughlin was getting downplayed a bit in your description there.

That said, there's a reason Spags is arguably the hottest head coaching candidate among NFL assistants, as well as the NFL's highest paid defensive coordinator. But as we sadly found out, succeeding as a coordinator and as a head coach are two different things. Only time will tell how Spags and the rest of these hot young names do.

Re: Rams expected to ask permission to interview Giants DC Spagnuolo

He's a fine defensive coach and puts together very good gameplans and has assembled a good defense that has parts that can move to other positions and play a variety of schemes within the 4-3. That's great.

I'm just concerned about the money that he'll command and what he'll do with the current defense. We don't have the star power that Spagnolo has now, and especially not last year. This year without the services of Osi and Strahan at DE and Mitchell at OLB, the Giants' sacks went down by 11 (53 to 42) and 3rd down conversion % went up by 5% (36 to 41), turnovers down by 3(25 to 22), and points allowed up from 23.3 to 26.7 per game. Without the services of the big name stars, the defense did noticably worse in many categories, though in terms of overall yardage allowed per game, they moved into the top 5 overall, so I don't know.

I'm just worried that he is more reliant on superstars than on building a solid team. I feel like Jim Schwartz of the Titans is more capable of taking our current defense and making something out of them, since the Titans' defense barely skipped a beat when their two biggest stars, Hanesworth and Vanden Bosh missed time(Week 17 not withstanding).

The Giants defense was average before Spagnola arrived. They've actually lost a lot of players and continue to put up impressive numbers. It just goes to show you how scheme plays a part in the success of a unit. If Haslett was to remain our coach, he'd want to continue playing the same boring, unaggressive schemes that he's been employing (and keeping us at the bottom of the league) since he arrived. I'm not sure if Spagnola is the man, but he's definately worth a look just because of the success he's had as a top coordinator of a very successful defense.

I think you make a great point with that comment. Throughout our team, we lack depth if the starter for a position is out. We need a scheme and some decent depth at many positions on the defense.

100% correct.....for whoever was citing the statistics and being slightly down this year from the SuperBowl season - well that's just an example of the ol' saying "lies, dayum lies and statistics". With the loss of their middle linebacker to free agency(his name escapes me-he went to Buffalo) and retirement of Michael Strahan and early IR injury to Osiyumora - this year's coaching job by Spagnuolo has been more impressive than last year's superbowl defense.......Sign me up for "Spags"

Yes, losing a future Hall of Famer and the leading sacker from the year before and your numbers only dip that much is pretty good in my opinion. Geez, we used the absence of any hack player to explain away why our defense was so bad.

Calls a defense but can he run a TEAM ???

How much influence did he have picking defensive players ??

How much freedom did he have under THE FIST, Coughlin ??

This will be Devaney's biggest test of his career, and we've all got our fingers crossed !!!

I like Spagnuolo. I would love to see him running the show.
