Rams fear ACL tear for Jake Long

Rams fear ACL tear for Jake Long

ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis Rams left tackle Jake Long was carted off the field after suffering a knee injury during Sunday's victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Following St. Louis' 23-13 win, Rams coach Jeff Fisher said the team's expectation is that Long's injury is serious.

"We anticipate the worst for Jake," Fisher said. "We'll confirm [it but] we're suspecting he has a torn ACL."

Long suffered the knee injury on a 3rd-and-8 pass play in which he was blocking for quarterback Kellen Clemens. There was no obvious reason for the injury, but Long clearly was in pain after falling down.

Long has started all 15 games this season after signing a four-year deal with St. Louis in March.

Starting right guard Rodger Saffold moved to left tackle, with Shelley Smith entering at right guard to make up for Long's absence.
Sounds as if OT might have just become more of a need this offseason...

Well, fortunately you have Matthews as our 1st selection! Right?

Still, I hope JLong recovers completely, otherwise, he remains too iffy for a too costly a player.

JLong already is too iffy of a player. This injury will seal his fate as a stop-gap left tackle while our future LT makes his bones on the right side. Whether its Mathews or someone else, I'm pretty confident we draft a tackle in the first round.

Unfortunately for Long there are clauses worked into his contract that affect his pay if he's not healthy at the end of the season this year and next year. I thought before we needed to go OLine a couple times early and this injury just strengthens that opinion.

Re-signing Saffold has also become a higher priority.

By now Saffold should feel more comfortable staying put with the Rams, i.e., OL wise and dealing contract?

An injured Jake Long means the Rams should resign a guy that most fans claim is injury prone?

Too iffy? Wasn't he a top 5 tackle this season? Especially in the run game?

Jake Long is rated as the 4th best LT in the game.

This year's line play has been the best we've seen since the GSOT days. It started out a bit rough but has looked pretty solid as the year progressed. The Rams have a rookie RB who is averaging just under 100 per game...and Kellen Clemens has remained upright, for the most part. Long has to be credited with at least SOME of that improvement. The Rams can and have done MUCH worse at LT. Tough break for him and the team.

Not sure how this changes anything. We needed to retool the line before Long got hurt, Wells, Dahl and Rodger are all possible departures. We need to get a grip of young talented offensive linemen in here next year if we want to make a run at a SB over the next five years. Depth is a must. Look at our D line.

It is now confirmed that Long tore his ACL and MCL, unfortunately.

    grumblegrumblegrumble

the O-line is a huge priority in the draft, still pretty much set on two OL unless at least one skill position has a player that would benefit as much

This changes nothing in regards to the first 1st Rd. pick as we should have taken matthews in the first round anyway, however one has to begin to wonder....do we draft 2 O-linemen in the 1st Rd. like S.F. did a few years ago?
