    Rams Get 1 comp pick

    Posted by playmaker

Howard Balzer just reported on Team 1380 that the St.Louis Rams received 1 compensatory pick in the 2008 draft, the very last pick in the draft. That pick is referred to a Mr. Irrelevant and since it is a compensatory pick, it can not be traded. Therefore the Rams are guaranteed the last pick in the draft.

Hey, if injuries occur en masse like they did last year, Mr. Irrelevant could get a few starts...!!!

I'm not certain of the exact procedure used to determine compensatory picks, but I believe it involves a pint of goat's blood, a divining rod, and an orb made of solid obsidian.

I remember that the NFL network did a report on "Mr. Irrelevant" and they showed that somewhere (maybe Disney) they had a whole parade for him last year. At least some media attention

Who knows, he may turn out to be a Colston type of guy.

Well this is someone who is going straight to the free agency.

I wonder what it feels like to be this pick...

Although Wikipedia isn't the best source, here's some more info. --Ramsplaya16
Thanks for the reference point, Playa16. Interesting.

BTW, I think Wikipedia is a most excellent source! Granted that many of its articles are borrowed from other places but they are, nevertheless, quite reliable and very practical given the countless links they produce.

Now let's see what the Rams will manage to make of 'Mr. Irrelevant'.

Good thing we got it, I was about to trade Linehan for that pick.

We drafted Mr Irrelaveant our first year in the NFL:

1937 10th round, 10th pick of the round, Solon Holt Rams G TCU

I bet that was Torry Holt's grandpa!

It's going to be a TE. Some random TE from an Ivy League school, book it.

    Rams awarded compensatory draft pick
    By Jim Thomas
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    03/31/2008

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The Rams weren’t expecting to get any compensatory draft picks this season, so they were pleasantly surprised to receive an extra draft pick -- a seventh-rounder, No. 252 overall -- by the league Monday at the NFL owners meetings.
"We’ll take it," coach Scott Linehan said.

And it’s just not any seventh-rounder. It’s Mr. Irrelevant, the last player to be taken in the 2008 draft. It marks the first time since the move to St. Louis that the Rams will have the Mr. Irrelevant pick.

The brain child of Paul Salata, a former NFL player, Mr. Irrelevant is "honored" in Newport Beach, Calif., annually following that year’s draft. Festivities include a roast, and a ceremony in which Mr. Irrelevant receives the "Lowsman" Trophy.

Seventh-round compensatory draft picks have been anything but irrelevant to the Rams in recent years. They’ve had a fair amount of success with them, including wide receiver Derek Stanley, offensive lineman Mark Setterstrom, quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, and fullback Madison Hedgecock.

"Those have been good picks for us," said Linehan, who then quipped, "They’ve been better than our third-rounders."

Compensatory picks are awarded based on a formula that takes into account salary, playing time and any postseason honors earned by free agents that leave or join a club in the previous offseason.

The Rams lost unrestricted free agents Kevin Curtis, Travis Fisher and Shaun McDonald last offseason, but gained Drew Bennett, Chris Draft, and Todd Johnson.

All told, 32 compensatory picks were awarded leaguewide Monday, with Baltimore and Cincinnati receiving a league-high four picks apiece. Washington, Cincinnati, Atlanta, and Baltimore each received a third-round compensatory pick, which is the highest round such picks can be awarded.

The Rams currently have nine picks in the draft April 26-27:

    * Their original picks in Rounds 1-6.

    * An additional pick in Round 6 from Denver as the result of the Jimmy Kennedy trade.

    * A seventh-round pick in Round 7 from Cincinnati as a result of the Ryan Fitzpatrick trade.

    * The seventh-round compensatory pick awarded Monday.

The Rams’ original seventh-round pick goes to Minnesota as a result of the 2006 trade that brought offensive lineman Adam Goldberg to St. Louis.
