Rams get DE Hall Davis under contract, giving them six of 11 signed

    Report from PFT:
At a time when many coaches and front-office employees are thinking about a much-needed vacation, the St. Louis Rams have been working hard to get their class of rookies under contract.

The latest? Per a league source, Louisiana-Lafayette defensive end Hall Davis has agreed to terms, per a league source. The Davis deal was done, we're told, on Saturday.

On Saturday, the team worked out contracts with third-round cornerback Jerome Murphy, fifth-round tight end Michael Hoomanawanui, seventh-round defensive end George Selvie, and seventh-round linebacker Josh Hull.

On Monday, the Rams agreed to terms with fourth-round wideout Mardy Gilyard.

It remains to be seen whether the Rams intend to finish the deal in the near future. It's possible that they're hoping to get all picks with the exception of first-round quarterback Sam Bradford and second-round tackle Rodger Saffold signed, sealed, and delivered before lighting the first lady finger of the Fourth of July weekend.

If so, the Rams need to sign only three more guys: sixth-round tight end Fendi Onobun, sixth-round defensive end Eugene Sims, and seventh-round defensive back Marquis Johnson.

Brian Stull's Twitter page indicates that the Rams have now signed 8 of 11, with Onobun, Saffold and Bradford the only ones remaining.

My bet is that Onobun will be signed w/24 hours, Saffold w/in a week, and Bradford will be signed before training camp.

I'm still really excited about the crop of rookies they've hauled in this year. A lot of intriguing prospects. I'm especially excited about the 3 DE's whom are all signed now? I guess I hadn't heard about Sims yet--even what I've read about Marquis Johnson sounds impressive.

I appreciate and enjoy your enthusiasm, but please tell me what it is about Hall Davis that has you the least bit excited?

I've been trying to get somewhat excited about this guy, but the fact that he had all of 6.5 sacks in his 4 years in college playing in a dump of a conference has let substantial air out of his balloon for me.

Maybe you or somebody else has something more to share about Mr. Davis.

    WHAT SAY YE?

Hall Davis is an athletic project. He played basketball and got into football late. As with many basketball players he has a quick first step, fluid moving and quick in pursuit. His problems are that he hasn't played a lot, hasn't shown he's instinctive and gets blocked more easily than he should.

Spags and the scouts obviously saw something that gave them serious hope because they drafted him higher than expected.

You're right to be skeptical. Hall Davis might be a Pro Bowler........but it's more likely he will be out of football within a matter of months.

We have to view Davis as the defense's answer to Fendi Onobun. Onobun is a huge ball o' clay as an offensive weapon; limitless talent, limited experience. Davis is the same as a pass rusher.

Having said that, the thing that concerns me most about Davis as the "work-in-progress" is that Davis, unlike Onobun, has 3 years of playing time for La-Laf and showed little improvement; in the stat column at least.

Davis (and Onobun for that matter) will be no better than the coaching they receive at this stage. And, pardon me for being a little cynical, but the Rams coaching staff over the past few years has not exactly instilled confidence in teaching technique. I know, I know......it's a different staff. Agreed. But you can understand a little cynicism at this point.

You have to look at the overall strategy the team employed at the DE spot.

With Chris Long and James Hall in place, and several other needs, the Rams could not afford to use a high draft choice on a DE. At the same time, though, they need help in the pass rushing deparment.

So... they draft not one, but three, late round DEs who all bring a certain potential to the mix.

Hall has the right measurables, but needs to develop technique.

Sims is built more like a specialist than an every-down player, and also needs some refining.

Selvie is a bit of a mystery. Two years ago, he looked like he could be the next Dwight Freeney or Elvis Dumervil. Then his production took a nose dive and he fell out of favor with the scouts. He is a classic boom or bust guy.

Individually, each guy is a longshot. That said, the likelihood that one of the three could emerge as a real contributer is better. It will be intriguing to watch this trio.

As has been mentioned before, Hall Davis is a raw prospect with nice size (6'4" 272) and great athleticism. Just to add a little more info from my handy draft preview magazine, it says Davis has lined up inside, outside, and on his feet (spend most of '09 season playing OLB). It says his lack of production is a result of him being asked too much which slowed his processing speed being that he is so raw. He was given a round 2-3 projection.

The key word to this guy is UPSIDE. Lets hope Spags can develop him into a top flight DE like he seemed to do constantly in NY.
