The Rams Are Going To Surprise People This Year

by Armen Dacity Contributor Written on May 12, 2010

For those who like to write "doom and gloom" articles, the St. Louis Rams are an easy target. Their recent history is bleak, to say the least. So, even for those who call themselves "fans," the natural tendency is to raise warning flags and prepare for the worst.

If you look deeply enough, though, there is reason for hope. The first step is to ask yourself whether you believe in three things: Steve Spagnuolo's vision for the team, the ability to develop players from within, and Sam Bradford.

Last year when Spagnuolo was hired as the Head Coach, most Rams fans were thrilled. After all, Spagnuolo was the architect of the defense that stopped the undefeated New England Patriots juggernaut and took home the Lombardi Trophy.

How strange it is to hear so many of those fans expressing a lack of faith in Spagnuolo's approach just one season later? What did these fans expect? Did they expect Spagnuolo to turn the team around in one year, notwithstanding the need to purge the roster of aged and underperforming veterans (not to mention the slew of injuries in 2009)? If they did, they were kidding themselves. It takes time to turn around a roster. I believe that this year we will start seeing the plan coming together on the field.

The second thing Rams fans like to complain about is the lack of "big name" acquisitions. Never mind that the Dan Snyders of the world never seem to get the positive press in December that they received in March.

I, for one, am happy to see the Rams making a commitment to developing talent, rather than overpaying for veterans who may have already peaked. The roster has many players who I think will come into their own this year, including Jason Smith, Laurent Robinson, Chris Ogbonnaya, Chris Long, Darrell Scott and Brad Fletcher.

Some Rams fans are so down on the team that they simply assume that the players on the current roster won't improve significantly. I guess those fans can't remember that the Super Bowl teams relied heavily on developed talent, including Kurt Warner, Az Hakim, London Fletcher and Todd Lyght, just to name a few.

The final "leap of faith" Rams fans must take to see the light at the end of the recent tunnel of failure involves Sam Bradford. He does not have to be the next Dan Marino as a rookie, but he does have to provide a spark. He has to have moments, even as a rookie, that will cause observers to say, "wow, this kid has something special." Plays like that will inspire the team and make the opposition nervous.

Some fans prefer to worry about Bradford's prior injuries or the system he played in at Oklahoma. I'd prefer to watch his highlight films and bristle in anticipation of Sam threading the needle from thirty yards away - a unique skill he truly possesses.

The next ascent of the St. Louis Rams likely will not be comparable to the "worst to first" turnaround of 1999. Rather, it will be a more conventional and gradual climb.

If you look closely enough, and have a bit of faith, you might see what I see.

2010 will be remembered as the year that the rise began.

Gosh Armen is not drinking the artificially sweetened kool-aid - he's drinking the original real deal with lots of sugar! .. Kidding aside, he makes good points about young players already on the roster improving, along with a "tortise vs the hare" analogy regarding our rise back to prominence in the league.

I'll admit I don't know what to expect this year, only that I have alot of hope same as every year around this time. As always there are a whole lot of "ifs" that surround the team: If Bradford .... If Fletcher, if Smith and Saffold, and so on and so on. One thing that has not diminished is my faith in Billy and Spags. I do believe in their abilities, and how they are going about trying to turn this team around. Who knows? Maybe we'll shock the world this year and win 5 or 6 games ... dare I say 8? In reality, I have no business predicting wins or losses, so I'll just reach for a glass of real kool-aid and wait and see ..

I have no idea who this guy is, but this is my way of thinking and will always be my way of thinking. For me, that's what makes it fun being a fan. All the naysaysers may be right MOST of the time, but you NEVER know what can happen (ex. 1999) and it's more fun to anticipate the best than to always expect the worst.

Make sure to pass some this way! To me, this is the most fun time to be a football fan. Your team is new and fresh with draft picks, and you're undefeated! It certainly brings an air of excitement and anticipation that is unmatched in other sports, which typically take years of player development before they make an impact.

Re: The Rams Are Going To Surprise People This Year

Does Armen know Peoria in some way?

As I've been saying for months...rookies usually get better. Young players get better. The guys we had last year won't be the exact same guys we have this year. Adding a flashy name to a roster means absolutely nothing at all in itself and we really tend to write guys completely off without even giving consideration.

Yesterday when I posted a Devaney comment from 101 ESPN about how they were high on Trautwein and McKee at RT if they hadn't gotten Saffold. This was basically called BS from the front office as people can't seem to understand how Devaney could be serious about liking a guy that they've seen paying badly (or not at all). Well perhaps its because he sees more of these guys in a two day span than we do in an entire regular season.

Fans are usually speaking from a standpoint of complete ignorance; so what they do is assume that the guys that they've seen briefly (or haven't seen at all) will and do...suck. The point that the guys they see are rookies or are very young players usually get recognized by fans initially. Then eventually these points are forgotten and lost as the football-less months continue and people over analyze their film snippets. As they focus on the bad plays over and over they come to the conclusion that their team needs to add some other guy that they have heard of. They don't acknowledge that guys can be developed.

Just because last year our defensive line struggled with all its youth doesn't mean that it will be the exact same line as this year and because we didn't add a big name player like Suh, that it will remain so. Guys like Scott and Long were really starting to get it last year. Sometime the solution to your problem is already on your roster.

Re: The Rams Are Going To Surprise People This Year

I think the Rams are on the rise (it's a process) but excuse me but all last offseason I read on this site that Bulger was going to put up 3000+ yards and the Rams were going to surprise people because of how much they had done to improve the team. It is odd though that this year, most people have gone to the exact polar opposite. Probably is a good sing.

    I'd say that's a fair statement.

You know, I looked up the article and noticed that Armen has a photo of himself near the byline. While I'm entirely heterosexual, I have to say that, from an entirely objective standpoint, he is a stunningly handsome man.

Well, that's debatable, although I'm sure you're wife would agree with you. At least I hope she would.

    Or a pharmacist.

Slow gradual climb is acceptable. Provided there is an actual climb rather than simply switching out the parts.
