Rams hire Holt to coach defensive line

MOSCOW - Former Idaho quarterback Scott Linehan became the new head coach of the St. Louis Rams in January. In the last week or so, there's been a rumor that the former Vandal was in talks with current Idaho coach Nick Holt about possibly joining his coaching staff.

It's now official.

Local Two Sports has confirmed that Nick Holt has accepted a job as the Defensive Line coach with the Rams. Sports Director Vince Trimboli spoke with Holt Sunday afternoon.

"It's a bittersweet deal," says Holt. "I feel good about what we've accomplished but an opportunity like this doesn't come around often. Scott (Linehan)'s an excellent coach and a close friend. I'll have a chance to move up in the organization. I've always had an itch to be an NFL coach."

On the open coaching position at Idaho Holt adds, "Now after two years this is a heck of a job. The new coach is gonna inherit some good players."

Holt added he expected somebody with Vandal ties to be named as his replacement.

A news conference is schedule for Monday afternoon.

Is this good or bad? Don't know anything about him. How have is Dline's done? I know Idaho hasn't done well.

I wonder if Haslett had a say in this? I mean the D-line coach will need to work closely with his guys, like the LB's coaches. Whatever. As long as it works.

In defense of the new HC, the problem with Marmie wasn't that he was a close friend. The problem with Marmie was that he's a terrible DC. We don't know if this guy is a good or bad coach, but I wouldn't judge him just because Linehan knows him from their past.
