Rams hire John Fassel as Special Teams Coach

    Per Peter King

Good get by Jeff Fisher for St.L--special teams coach John Fassel, son of Jim: Special teams coach Fassel leaves Raiders for Rams
John was the Raiders ST coach for the last 3 seasons, and based on this from the Raiders site it appears to be another QUALITY hire:

John Fassel is in his fourth year with the Raiders coaching staff, the third in his current capacity. Fasselís special teams unit has led the NFL for two straight seasons in takeaways (10) and turnover margin (+7) and also led the league with 26 total points scored in 2010.
Thank you Jeff. What a staff man.

Some families need to lay off the J's. Jim Tressel, John Tressel; Jim Harbaugh, John Harbaugh; Jay Gruden, John Gruden, and their father Jim Gruden...

I don't know how they did with returns(other than the scoring), but the turnover ratio certainly looks good if he led two years running. As for the scoring... would that be 4 TD's and a safety? Our scoring offense has been particularly bad, but a better special teams unit could help that just with field position.
    I believe!

I'm pretty sure they had a game against the Chargers in 2010 where they blocked a punt out of the back of the endzone for a safety and returned a blocked punt for a TD, all in the first quarter

Love this hire. hopefully it leads to getting a speedy returner in the draft.

Seems like a solid hire. Our Special Teams has been questionable for a while. For the last 3-4 years I have always held my breath when we punt, till the returner got tackled. We were way better under spags, but still gave up some returns sometimes. I.E patrick peterson got me believing in holding my breath again last year.

Agreed. We have given up too many yards on kickoffs, and no one on here forgot Patrick Peterson making a fool out of us twice. The second time was gut-wrenching.

I like the hire based off the stats in the OP but I wonder why they let him go?

The Raiders cleaned house after the death of Al Davis. Fassel was just caught in the wave.

Personally, I'm more than a little partial to the "J" brothers. Especially, Jimmy, Johnny, and Jack. Throw in Sensi J and the Juke Joint will be Jiving in no time ...

That's because of a severe lack of overall depth on the team. When they fix that issue the special teams will get better.
