Rams Hire Ray Sherman As Wide Receivers Coach (S.N.)

Rams Hire Ray Sherman As Wide Receivers Coach
by Ryan Van Bibber on Jan 30, 2012 3:05 PM CST in St. Louis Rams Hire Jeff Fisher

Former Dallas Cowboys wide receivers coach Ray Sherman has been hired by the St. Louis Rams.

The St. Louis Rams have hired Ray Sherman as their next wide receivers coach. The news first bubbled up on Twitter via NFL agent Fredrick Lyles, who represents Patrick Crayton. TST has since confirmed Sherman's hiring with another source. Sherman fits the profile as another well-experienced coach for Jeff Fisher's staff.

Sherman's most recent job was in Dallas, coaching receivers there. He was interviewed for the head coaching vacancy in 2011 to satisfy the Rooney Rule. Dallas let him walk after interviewing him because of some controversy around Dez Bryant, of course.

Sherman has a reputation as a coach who gives his players a wide berth, especially important among receivers who seem to typify the diva modern athlete. According to Matt Moseley of Fox Sports, Sherman allowed Bryant to "vent" on the sidelines. He also maintained a regular "Keepin' It Real Thursdays" for his players to "blow off steam." Miles Austin also spoke highly of Sherman and regretted losing him in an interview with PFT.

Sherman's name first bubbled to the surface as a coaching candidate last week. Rams great Henry Ellard was another name in contention for the job.

Sherman worked with Fisher in Tennessee from 2005-2006 as the receivers coach. He was with the Packers from 2000-2004. His first NFL coaching job was in 1988 as a running backs coach with the Oilers.

Another quality, veteran hire. Staff looks very nice... Woulda loved Ellard but Sherman has gotten HC interviews before which says something

Its a nice brains-trust team Fisher has assembled, obviously not letting any aspect of his coaching staff go undermanned with a rookie. Fisher is playing to win this year.

He turned the undrafted nobody Miles Austin into a pro bowler. He turned Mr. Injury and bust Laurent Robinson into a monster. And if Dez Bryant wasn't an idiot and injured often he would be a top 10 WR in the NFL. I like this guy working with our WR's.

Re: Rams Hire Ray Sherman As Wide Receivers Coach (S.N.)

I've read that the reason Dallas let him walk had nothing to do with Dez Bryant, and was to do with the fact that Jason Garrett didn't like the fact that Sherman was a legitimate candidate for the HC job in 2011, and was well liked by ownership. It's rumoured that Garrett was nervous keeping around a guy on the staff who could easily be a HC in the eyes of ownership if Garrett were to struggle.

But that's what i've seen. I can't imagine you would let Sherman go easily when he got "problem" players like TO and Bryant to play well

Interesting how these coaches become available--considering Dallas did have a rather successful season all things being equal--don't see why Dallas let him slip away. If nothing else would have thought Dallas would have let go there o-line coach.

But never pay no mind to rumors---nothingn happens without J. jones stamp of approval in Dallas land--just one more reason despite an open pocket book and paper-talent on their squad why they can't make it to the big dance

This coach made a nobody Laurent Robinson into an exceptional Wr. Imagine what he could do with our "nobody" WRs!

I don't think he coached Robinson.

i`m sure he was once brought in for an interview for the Rams HC vacancy in the past..or perhaps as an OC certainly feel a bit of Deja-vu with Ray Sherman and the Rams being in the same article.

seems a good hire to me..i think outside of Ware and Witten, WR`s for Dallas have been their strong point the last few years.

That's right, I'm pretty sure Sherman didn't coach this past season.

I do think its a great hire though.

He's been coaching since 1974 and has been an OC three times before, including the Vikings after Billick left for the Ravens.

He's coached plenty of name brand WR's including TO, Moss, Driver, Austin, Bryant, Carter in the last decade or so, and certainly seems like a players' coach. I wouldn't think that he'd still be coaching if he didn't do well with them.

Best of luck to him and I definitely love the experience that we're putting together.

I like the hire, we're building up an experienced staff here. Taking bits and pieces from other teams with an actual off season this year should really help us.

Jim Thomas says nothing confirmed yet...

Ray Sherman as Rams WR coach not finalized at this point.
Im guessing though he has been hired...

Boudreaux and Waufle havent been confirmed yet either. A top agent confirmed it so I'm guessing it's done.
