I was going to say him too, but he played his last year for the Lions.

Also, I think we have to bump David Ray (good call on the obscure player!) for HOFer Tom Fears.

If this elite team allows two and three RBs, I'd think that Les Josephson is a good All-Rams candidate (1964-74 sans '68). Les played 10 years as a HB and FB, good receiver too. Scored a combined total of 29 TDs, including a passing TD.

You beat me to it. I too was going to suggest that there may be another All-Rams of longer tenure and / or prestige than P/WR David Ray, who played a 6 year NFL career with us (1969-74).

Besides, your replacement, Tom Fears, HOF Class of 1970, is my 'paisano'.

Since you've already named Fears, End (receiver), here's a little bit more about him. Tom only played 9 years in the NFL, from 1948 to '56 - two games in his last season as he was seriously injured - yet managed to produce excellent numbers for the era. Interestingly, in 1948 Fears also played DB and got 2 INTs, returning one for a score. As a receiver however, Fears amassed 5,397 yards on 400 receptions for an AVG of 13+ yds. and a total of 38 TDs. He led all receivers during his first three NFL years.

    - -

Those were the years when the league only played 12 games a season; in 1951 Fears played 7 games, in '53 he played in 8 games. His best year was 1950 when he caught 84 passes for 1,116 yards. Those were years when the Rams' offense dominated -- precursors to the GSOT if you will; for example, in 1950 they scored 466 points, approx. 39 PPG. The Rams played for the league Championship in 1949, '50, '51 (Champions), and '55.

[Many players before the 70s were physically unable to play longer careers due to injury and a sports medicine acumen that was light-years distant to what it is today.]

C'mon man, Hirsch only played in the NFL for the Rams. That's like saying because a guy was in college he's not pure Rams You ARE a sadist with this challenge.

    Hey AV,

Coming up with a CB and TE proving difficult (thought I had CB with Leroy). As for TE, now I get why nary a mention of Cook this past year setting all time Rams record....not a strong point for Rams.

I think Darryl Henly only played for Rams as CB before he got stupid ......

Pat Thomas is worthy of one of the CB spots.

Re: Rams Historians: Build the All-Time "Pure Ram" Team

    LB Carl Ekern
    DE Leonard Little

Ekern wasn't ever considered great but he was a Ram his whole career and was a contributor for many years.
Kind of surprised that Farr and Brooks were put up there at DT before Lamar Lundy.

The three CB I was going to list all played their last year or two for another team. I think that's going to be the hardest position.

Well, I've already got my two players in but I'll share Clarence Williams, CB, with you.

Clancy Williams played 8 years in the NFL, all Rams (1965-72). Three games shy of 100 and came up with 28 INTs. Good kickoff return man too.

Carl Ekern, a good LB! Played 12 years, from 1976-88 (sans '79).

Lamar Lundy was a fine DE, not DT. He initially played TE also. Senior member of our fab Fearsome four, his All-Rams career was from 1957-69. 13 straight, strong, and steady years.

I nominate Terry Nelson for tight end.

Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hirsch may have played with the AAFC Chicago Rockets before the merger, but does that really disqualify him from being considered a pure Ram?

Yeah, I realized that later on. Senior moment. Ok let's replace Deacon with OLB Isaiah Robertson. I think he was a Ram his entire career.

But is it? If it's Waterfield in the end, so be it. But I'm not sure it's quite so cut-and-dry. Now hear me out....I think we have to at least look at Sam Bradford. He has more completions than Waterfield; a better completion percentage; a much better TD-Int. ratio, roughly 100 yards more per game, and an 18 point higher rating.

I know there's a lot of status given to nostalgia, and more than enough anti-Bradford sentiment to scream down this notion before it's even considered. And I'm not really wanting to drag that into this light-hearted thread; so I'm going to leave it at this. But I think it would be unfair to not at least consider the idea: Bradford has been a better QB than Waterfield.
